Happy birthday to my hub :)

Birthdays don't tell much about age except the number; stomachs tell a lot more.

We had Swensen's Unlimited on Thursday, Paradise Dynasty on Friday, Macs on Saturday, and lots of Sichuan food on Sunday. Even on Monday, Sito packed food for himself and the kids as I met the Oxford girls for dinner.

So on his birthday on Tuesday, he said no to a buffet breakfast. Instead, we just ditched Kai at home and went downstairs for char siew rice. Even that made us very full!

Early celebration with the grands on Sunday

YeePo went to Malaysia so she missed seeing the kids kind of enjoying the non-spicy dishes at the new Sichuan restaurant downstairs. In fact, Yu said he wanted to go there for his birthday! Yang saw YeePo two days later as they were on the same train home - one from tuition and one from work!

Playing Risk with the younger ones on Monday

We like to see our kids happy and thriving :)

The board game was a request from Yang who played it in school or something. So nice to see my boys playing together :) Kai eventually joined in the fun. This morning, I woke to find three of them playing in Yang's room.

Happy birthday, Papa!

Kai wasn't feeling well that day so he was napping when his brothers came home. We waited for him to wake before cutting the cake. Thankfully, we made it before Yang had to go for tuition else it would be all in PJs again :p

We only ate the cake at night after the kids went to bed, as it was green tea azuki anyway. Bought it after my dinner date on Monday - never tried Yamazaki cakes before but we found it similar to Four Leaves.

And with that, we're done with birthdays this year! But we're not done with cakes - will be logcakes coming up next :)

Almost the end of the school year

Only one more week to the end of the school year. I'm so glad that we're all free from exam stress for now!

Kai's exams ended on 2 October. He has been nua-ing since then *.* But ok, he worked hard on his own throughout the year, earning 10points for his L1R4. He has three years to improve his English!

Yang and Yu also did well. Yang achieved AL14 and Yu AL7. We were particularly happy with Yang's results as he had worked so hard for them. He was so pleased when he told us he scored 100% for synthesis and transformation in his English paper - this was an area in which he didn't do well at first and asked Papa for help. Sito found an assessment book and worked with him all the way. It paid off!

We will continue to work with him during the term break to prepare him for P6. I will also work very hard to compile Chinese grammar from P3 onwards...! I even wrote a 范文 for Yang based on his exam version. I did the same for Yu earlier too - his Chinese compo really 不堪入目!

We were also happy with Yu's results. I mean, he barely studied... Only did papers grudgingly unlike sweet Yang Yang. Went through Chinese words even more grudgingly. He made a lot of mistakes in science though which was unexpected. But he scored full marks for English oral - I was impressed haha!

We were supposed to celebrate end of exams for all on 30 October right after the last paper but my tongue ulcer was still bothering me so we postponed it until yesterday. I refused to go to Swensen's Unlimited with ulcers again - I was recovering from ulcers during our first trip there last year :(

End of exams also marked the end of The Big Separation - it was a chore to keep Kai away from them for four weeks so that they could study with minimal distractions! On the eve of the last paper which was science, Kai even made Yu cry. We attributed Yu's AL3 in science to that :p

Yu dubbed this a prince ice cream

This? Kiiing ice cream!

These two really enjoyed making fancy sundaes :) But actually Yang didn't eat a lot of ice cream as he had a lot of food before hitting the desserts. No wonder he's so meaty now :)

Kai didn't make fancy sundaes but he decided to have more roast beef after desserts!

Sito's affogato - coffee from machine, ice cream from dessert kiosk

We also took laksa and prawns separately and combined them to make seafood laksa. And he tipped a waffle into the chocolate fountain - it solidified into chocolate coated waffle, yummy!

Sito rubbing his belly - why?

Coz his boys just took turns to lie down on his belly for warmth! Yu had since run off to get more ice cream - can see the small yellow speck in the distance? :p

This time, I order MSW durian ice cream and regular durian gelato to compare them side by side. The gelato was smoother for sure and the ice cream icier, but the flavour was stronger for the MSW. Even Sito could tell from the smell haha!

The Geneo outlet is really nice - spacious and not too crowded, unlike our visit to the Changi outlet when we had to queue for everything. It's so much easier for the kids to get things on their own, with my hawk eyes on them :p Most importantly, it's very near us! We go to Swensen's so often that we will have yet another voucher for two to dine free at Swensen's Unlimited. Can plan next trip already :)

And yesterday, we went to the Science Centre. This time, we didn't try to reach there at opening time. We took our time. Woke naturally :) Made and had breakfast leisurely :) Read news quietly :)

Kids looked at beyblade toys happily :)

So excited?!

We eventually reached the Science Centre at about 11 am. Found new exhibits! The AI stuff were fun. The old exhibits were still fun to play with. This time, it seemed that more staff were on hand to explain things. One even did magic tricks for us and explained to us the trick behind! Sito thought it would be interesting for the kids to do some part-time job there during school holidays when they're older.

Some claw machine prototype - a bit slow...

Three small humans bullying a robot at puck fighter!

This room was really fun to play and watch :)

A carnivorous plant ate my kid!

While Kai "prayed", Yang looked resigned to being eaten haha!

Two of us got eaten!

The kids thought this was gross, hahaha!

Watching the fire tornado show

The other two came to us from the poop (play) room

But we lost all three after the show. We thought they were in the poop room but no. So we went around to look for them. Kai didn't respond to WhatsApp. I located him near the fear room based on iPhone location but the staff didn't see three boys.

Later, Sito found Yu dashing about the AI area as he lost sight of his brothers and somehow thought they would be there... I met them at the virus area as Yu thought his brothers might be there too. In the end, I stayed with Yu while Sito went to look for the brothers. They were indeed in the fear room! Somehow they thought Yu was with us. Oh my goodness...

Gave them a scolding for running off without telling us. And the two big brothers who didn't care about the youngest!

We decided to leave at about 3 pm but as usual, we took a long time to get out. And it was pouring! It took us 15min to get from the Science Centre to the HDB side as Sito had to ferry us one by one using our one and only umbrella. Kai went first. When he came back for Yang, his shirt was drenched on one side :( I told the brothers and Yu said something real cute - he was sad that Papa did so much for them but he and his brothers couldn't do anything to repay him! I, at least, could cook for Papa.

😂

The rain somehow became smaller when it was finally my turn, and I walked out to meet Sito in the middle of the crossing. By the time we got through the HDB area to the traffic light to the MRT station, we could do without the umbrella. This was exactly like the last time it rained on our way out - rain became smaller after Sito was half wet! Grrr! We must remember to bring extra umbrellas next time!

Dinner at Paradise Dynasty. Kai had wanted two bowls of noodles but I convinced him to order one first. In the end, he was full from one bowl plus XLB. We were all very full for the second lunner in two days. Sito and I especially. The kids still had snacks at movie time later last night.

Today, we're heading out again - to the library. Tmr, we're having dinner outside to celebrate Sito's birthday with the grands. Monday, I'm meeting the Oxford girls for dinner. Food, food, food! It's like my revenge eating after ulcers :p

May the kids always be open with us

Yang had a scary outburst on the evening of 22 October.

It was time to watch Fixing Fate, a Mediacorp drama series that found favour with the boys. Kai was holding the remote control and looked like he was going to pause the anime. Yang suddenly went for the remote control. Kai held on to it. Yang stormed off into his room and closed the door.

???

I quickly went after Yang but found the door locked. I knocked and asked him to open the door. He refused. I told him I had the key but I'd rather he open it. Nope. So I unlocked it from outside and went in.

Yang was hiding in his blanket. It was hot so I uncovered his legs. He refused to uncover his head. I could tell from his voice and actions that he was sobbing. Sayang-ed him a bit and told him I'd give him time to calm down.

Eventually, he let me see his face. He said it was Yu's fault. I was surprised coz the tussle was with Kai. But later when he emerged from his room, he went to play with Yu.

So the story goes like this... Earlier in the evening, they were all watching TV - MeWatch and YouTube - and choosing the video turn by turn. It was Yu's turn when we asked him to go shower so he ended his video and passed the remote control to Kai. So now it was Kai's turn, and it was during that when I said it was time for drama, which meant Yang wouldn't have his turn to choose a video as it would be bedtime by the end of the drama.

But Yang wanted to watch Yu's video too. His point was that he could have continued watching that video if Yu didn't end it. So he was upset and felt it was unfair.

So... my fault after all?? Um...

But yes, the whole fairness thing was at play again. And I also don't understand why they must do turn by turn when each of them likes different things sometimes and videos are of different lengths! Told them to all agree on videos to watch as I could stop them any time for meals etc.

Anyway, my point here is about the part where Yang suddenly stormed into his room. I still remember Na telling me about a student in her school who had an argument with his mother and suddenly turned and jumped out of his window.

We do have grilles in the kids' bedrooms and the keys are all with me, used only during window cleaning. But it was still scary to see him storm off like that, locking his room some more. Having heard stories about the things that children could do to themselves thanks to my old job and boss and news of course, I was very worried. My poor Yang. My poor heart.

Really must instil in them that there's nothing they could not talk to us about. Nothing.

Date with Kai

Kai and I went to watch a musical!

Journey to Singapura

Yes, it was in Chinese - Mandarin, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese and Hakka, I think... With lots of 新谣 with new lyrics. There were screens showing subtitles in both Chinese and English but our friend here said he still couldn't understand *.*

I wonder if his brothers might have understood more... I had wanted to get the whole family to watch this musical but then I realised it was the Saturday before exams for Yang and Yu. Just nice, make it a date with my firstborn :)

It has been so long since we last went out together, just the two of us! So long that neither of us really remembered when, except that it must be before Yang entered P1 so that means before 2021, gosh... Also a nice start for Kai's year-end holidays - nowadays secondary school kids have looong break...

Before we left home, he told me to act normal.. But I'm very normal what... Haha! At one point, he was resigned to me holding on to his arm but only for a short while.. Ok ok, I don't embarrass my teen :p

At first we were supposed to head to Raffles City for dinner. But we waited quite a bit for the bus so while on the bus, I searched for a nearer spot and found Josh's Grill at 313. Yay to bus 14 that traverses town!

So happy compared to the photo above right? Haha!

Got him a drink even though he had his water bottle with him. He was surprised to hear the coke cost $3.50. Well, that's the price for beverages. But it's ok since it's rare that we're out together like this :)

Kai was so sweet - he offered me a nice piece of his steak. I didn't think the steak was enough - 200g - so I saved some of my chicken chop for him. Indeed, not enough! I had more than enough as I had - still have at this moment - an ulcer...

I think it's nice to have one-one time with the kids. They can be so different when they're the only child. And it's nice to see them on their own, not as one of three kids...

Kai's cooking

I’d been waiting for this day but when Kai pulled a plastic bag of some soggy thing out of his pocket after school one day in early July, I was quite appalled…

Guess what he made for his first kitchen session?

Yes, omelette tortilla wrap. The tortilla had gone all soggy in the plastic bag. He was supposed to bring a box but he either forgot about the kitchen session or didn't know. I didn't think he brought his apron and towels too...

Anyway, he didn’t want to eat it. I have a weak stomach.. Papa gamely ate it all and said it was good! Best part - Kai asked me if I had reheated it to 60degrees - so I guess food safety education was well done??

Back in our time, boys didn't have home economics. But I remember my brother bringing home some food he made. Don't know if it was still called home economics then but now it certainly isn't. It's called food and consumer education (FCE) now. Think that means no more sewing? I broke my mother's sewing machine more than once haha!

Potato patties

Kai doesn't like potato except as fries or hashbrowns so he didn't eat his food again... It was nicer when we toasted it as it wasn't fried enough.

Cinnamon and banana muffin

This was so good! I think I can replicate it one day. I love cinnamon stuff :) But of course our boy wouldn't have it.

Fried rice

This, he had. Yummy fried rice with a tad too much chicken powder haha! So after that, I scrambled my eggs like this for fried rice. Also tried added chicken stock to the fried rice. Now Kai would praise my fried rice when he sees my eggs scrambled like this 💕

Exam piece - a reprise of the tortilla wrap

See, less soggy with the box! But no, he still wouldn't have it!

Some cheese puffs?

Like the potato patties, these didn't really have a name. Or Kai couldn't give us a proper name. Just a mish-mash of ingredients he used. But these were really nice with a quick toast!

So that's his Sec 1 kitchen experience. I had never expected him to make waves in the kitchen, and this is reinforced after the above. Not that the food wasn't good, but that he just wasn't interested and found kitchen sessions a bother. Ah well... Lucky for him that food is easily accessible in Singapore!

I compare his kitchen sessions to mine back in 1993-4. Really 小巫见大巫 but I guess cooking skills aren't terribly essential nowadays??

Back then, it was also pair work but each pair worked on two items rather than the same item. We started with a simple orange cordial - don't laugh, need to boil ok... Then there was fried rice of course. But we also had prawn toast. And once there was a whole fish! I couldn't gut the fish but a friend at the next table came to the rescue 👍

I guess some kids are just better at cooking than others.. Or at least, more interested. Today, Kai went to a friend's place to play after lunch, before the two of them headed off to Bishan for a chess tournament in the evening, actually happening now as I type. This was the first time he travelled to an unfamiliar place on his own - plenty of text messages along the way, very cute :)

Anyway, his friend A cooked fried noodles for him! We were so impressed.. It will be late when he comes home tonight. Tmr, I shall ask him if he feels inspired by his friend to get wokking at home!

Kai was lost... again!

Yes, he got lost in P1 and again now in Sec 1... At least this time, he is 13 and armed with a smart phone, not barely seven!

Again, he was on the bus and missed his stop. Only this time, he wasn't asleep; he was playing Roblox. So he didn't miss by just one stop as we did before coz blur until we saw the school fly by us. He missed by seven bus stops!

Yang and Yu were home yesterday due to PSLE marking these three days. So I was surprised to see a second SimplyGo notification saying Kai took bus 67. I went into the app and found that he alighted at Rochor, and then took 67 back to school. Lucky he always leaves the house very early so he was still early by the time he got to school.

Texted him immediately...

Mama: My dear boy, were you lost??
Kai: We don't talk about that

??!!

I dug into screen time and found that he was playing Roblox. And he used Google Maps too :p I blocked Roblox immediately. He has been playing chess on the bus since the start of the year with no problem but Roblox is indeed addictive!

When he came home, I asked him about it and he was rather sheepish and cheeky about it. Yes, he was playing Roblox but it was all his brothers' fault as they introduced it to him *.* When I told him I'd blocked it, he said he had deleted it. Was it due to missing the school bus stop? Ya, kind of.. Ok...

But it was a good learning experience, he said. So at dinner time, I asked him to share his experience with his brothers and we discussed what to do if they found themselves lost.

Kai said it was easy - just go across the road and take the same bus back. I agreed. And told them to also look at the information board for other possible buses too.

But what if there is no bus back?? It's time to call Papa and Mama! But Yu had a suggestion - take the bus to a MRT station and go home from there. Woohoo, that works too!

Yang and Yu also said they missed the school bus stop before coz they were either daydreaming or chatting but it was only one or maybe two stops, and they walked back with other kids walking along the same walkway, probably those staying in Novena/Newton area.

On a related note, I really like SimplyGo!

Yu turns nine!

Yu turned nine on Thursday :)

We have been waiting for this day for some time...

First of all, he's supposed to start cutting his own nails in P3 just like Kai but he is still getting me to cut his nails! So the deal is ok, after nine. I just cut his nails yesterday coz I forgot but I'll shift the nail cutter to his room and let his teacher remind him to cut, hahahaha!

More importantly, he has agreed to make school trips on his own, without Papa accompanying him, on days when Yang couldn't be with him. This would really mark the end of the parents' school trips! Yay and nay at the same time coz it's really quite nice to have some one-one time...

And finally... He's nine! Each of our kids are growing up so fast! Too fast.. Sometimes very slow but ya, it always seems so fast at birthdays...

Yu wasn't feeling very well when he came home on Wednesday. His nose was a bit runny and as a result of the allergy, one eye was a bit red from rubbing.

On Thursday morning, his nose was better but his eye felt a bit swollen. He wondered if he should go to school. I left the decision to him, making sure he knew that he couldn't play phone games if he had a sick day. He took a looong time thinking and decided to stay home. But when he went to pee, he said, "Should I change my mind?" And he changed his mind *.*

All was fine in school. Yu came home looking totally fine. The three of them dropped their bags, changed their shoes and off we went to Clementi! At that hour, we could get student meals which are essentially the usual main course at a discount, plus a soup or a drink. But the choices are limited and only Kai chose from that menu. It's ok. The parents swopped with Yang and Yu :p

Ice cream all round!

We went to buy some snacks and a cake before going home. Bumped into Yu's classmate-neighbour on our way home who was on his way to his grands' with his father. They were on the same bus that morning apparently, and Yu told him where we were going so that they didn't have their usual playdate at the playground.

In any case, Yu wasn't looking forward to any play date when he had one hour of phone time on his birthday!

All in PJs for the cake-cutting

It was a late lunch and no one was really hungry at dinner time. So I didn't cook :p But Yu had two slices of cake! Think he was very full after that... Yang had only one but both boys reserved the remaining two slices for the next day so for the first time, Sito and I didn't have any of Yu's birthday cake!

Second cele with the grands on Sunday

Yu was looking worried in the photo as there were too many candles on the tiny cake and the cake looked like it was on fire!! I wasn't in the picture as I couldn't figure out the timer on my phone - first time trying to use timer on this new phone :)

Third cele, joint with WaiPo, yesterday

Yu put down his ✌️ when WaiPo mentioned it so she kena sabo-ed into giving a ✌️ hoho!

I must say Ajisen may not be the best place to celebrate with a cake. The staff brought us the cake in the original plastic bag without a lighter, and delivered only four plates and four forks. We had to ask for five more sets and this time, bowls came, haha! But the staff took a nice photo for us :)

One surprise - Kai ate the cake! He said just to try 👍 On the other hand, Yu didn't have the cake - he said in Mandarin so WaiPo could understand, that he eats chocolate and he eats cake, but he doesn't eat chocolate cake. Also, he eats strawberry, he eats cream, and he eats lollipop, but he doesn't eat strawberry cream lollipop!

We went out separate ways after lunch. But something funny happened - Sito asked the kids to give WaiPo a hug and WaiPo gave Yu a peck! Wth?! I don't even think she kissed me before!?! Sito and I had a good laugh. Last night, I told Yu he must give me a kiss coz I didn't get one, haha!!

Anyway, Mother they all went to buy an iron while we went to the library. We just nua-ed at the library for over an hour until Kai got bored. Then we parked them at Popular while we went to shop for toiletries and herbs.

Then we went to the pasar malam between J8 and the interchange to get our hands on our fave snacks, woohoo! This time, I got goreng pisang and shark's fin soup. I didn't expect Yang and Yu's reactions when they saw me buying the latter - you can't buy that, you'll cause more sharks to be hunted! Oh my... Apparently, they read that somewhere... I had to tell them that this shark's fin soup did not contain any shark's fin....

We were all quite full from lunch, especially Kai with his extra noodles and eight pieces of karaage! So dinner was easily settled with the food from pasar malam. The kids also had some ice cream while watching the Saturday night movie on TV. It's seldom that Kai watches a whole movie with us but it was Percy Jackson and the Sea Monster and he's now halfway through the first Percy Jackson book.

Anyway, so all the celebrations are over. Yu is properly nine now. Still a baby. Forever our baby :)

If I were an educator...

Sito met some friends for dinner recently some weeks ago. One topic came up - education. Two of us had a brief discussion over breakfast. I want to put down some thoughts here.

Two ideas:

1) Dedicated form teachers

Why:

Two reasons - (a) reducing admin of teaching staff for the staff's benefit, and (b) having a main teacher who truly knows the form kids for the kids' benefit:

a) This started off from the topic of flexi-adjunct teachers. The work scope is to be agreed upon between the school and the teacher. So the teacher could effectively just teach, no CCA etc. And they're apparently free to teach tuition unlike MOE teachers.

That sounds a lot more attractive than to be a regular MOE teacher with all the admin, CCA and committee work (e.g. organise children's day cele) on top of teaching responsibilities.

Over the years, we've heard of teaching staff being burdened by admin. The recent findings from the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey showed that full-time teachers in Singapore spent four hours a week on admin work, above the OECD average of three hours.

I don't know what this admin work entails but I think there is bound to be some amount of admin no matter what. I thought things should be much better these days with the PG app. Perhaps the admin pertains more to the lower primary kids and even Sec 1 kids coz new to school, new to a lot of things?

Actually, as I write, I think this dedicated form teachers idea is more for the kids' benefit, haha! Ok, I move on...

b) During my school years, the form teachers taught the whole class at least one subject, spent a lot of time with us be it teaching in the classroom or taking attendance at the assembly area. Think we also had this thing called contact time or something.

Now?

Let me consider this in the primary school context, as I'm more familiar with this level.

Kai had three form teachers in P5-6, and only one of them taught him. The other two taught the GEP kids in his form class - his was a mixed form class comprising mainstream and GEP kids who are in different classes for English, Maths and Science. So none of three form teachers knew all kids equally well. After they changed the format from parents-teachers meeting to parent-child-teachers-conference involving only the form teachers, we couldn't really get much out of the session.

Oh, and now with subject-based banding in secondary schools, Kai's form class has G1-3 kids so the form teachers do not teach all the kids unless they teach DnT, FCE, music, art or PE.

Back to primary school. Yang is in a mainstream class (i.e. no GEP kids) and Yu is still in lower primary, but it's a 50-50 chance that their form teachers teach them in any subject at all coz students are split into groups for the four academic subjects. Based on what the kids told me and parent chat groups, there are usually two groups - one regular and one for those who need more help. For Chinese, I have seen four different spelling lists so could be four groups - foundation (from P5 onwards), 核心班,深广班 and higher Chinese.

I don't know if they split the 核心班 into regular and those who need more help... But I know that for any subject, those who need a lot more help would be offered remedial after school - I asked for English remedial for Yang and was told it was to help those scoring below 40% 😱

The kids then take all the non-examinable subjects together as a class, with the exception of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) which is taught in mother tongue languages.

So if the form teacher teaches non-examinable subjects, lucky for the kids coz the main teacher actually teaches them and has more time to know them. Otherwise, it's as good as having no form teachers.

Idea:

Since form teachers already may not teach their form kids, why not have a dedicated form teacher for each class, supported by a subject-form teacher? This would be similar to P1 and P2, where the form teachers teach all the kids and know them very well.

There are already designated slots for Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) and Programme for Active Learning (PAL) in the timetable, currently taken by the form teachers. A dedicated form teacher can also take on some subjects common to all students, e.g. Social Studies and even PE - see my next point far below. Music and art may be challenging... But well, see below too..

Further, academic teachers need to complete the curriculum. The form teachers can devote more time to psychological and social wellbeing, and be the kids' cheerleaders in school. They work at a manageable ratio of 1:30-40, compared to the one or two school counsellors who cannot possibly be everywhere. Students are probably more familiar with their form teachers too. Of course, serious cases will still need to be referred to counsellors.

Ultimately, the aim is to have someone who is the main point of contact for the kids, who know everything about them be it academic or otherwise, who will find out more about them from other subject teachers, who will liaise with parents and the community when necessary. The dedicated form can follow their classes as they progress through the school, like how the kids don't change classes from P1 to P2 and from P5 to P6. As such, they become sort of a surrogate parent in school, which could be very beneficial for the kids.

While this would require significant additional manpower resources, such resources may be quite different from the usual teaching requirements which require a degree in maths to teach it, for instance. I would argue that this may not require a degree but someone with the heart to guide young people.

2) Review teaching for non-academic subjects

Apparently, it is difficult to hire teachers for certain subjects like music, art and PE. Even the languages - not just mother tongue but also English.

Ok, put the languages aside - maybe I'll talk about them another day coz I sometimes imagine myself a Chinese teacher, haha!

I took a look at Kai's timetable, which is in a document with the timetables for all classes. There are as many PE teachers as there are classes per level but only about three each for music and art. I think it's coz there are more periods of PE per week vs. the other two subjects. It's similar for the primary school kids based on the teacher list online.

Now, music, art and PE require some technical knowledge. Not everyone can teach them properly - and safely too when it comes to PE. So they are not easily replaced. But truth be told, apart from the handful of MEP/AEP kids and those taking lessons outside school*, how well can we expect kids to do in the aesthetics?

* Somehow, many kids learn piano in Singapore... How many truly enjoy it? Yang tried a few months and stopped coz not interested anymore.

Look at me - love to sing, yes, but can't read notes or play any instrument. Yup, not even the recorder that we were made to play in school. And don't talk about my art.

Kai had a music WA last term which required him to write notes and play a tune on a digital keyboard. He has probably forgot all about it right after that.

For the aesthetics, I think it is more important to expose the kids and teach appreciation. There are many music and art enrichment schools out there. Why not outsource the aesthetics? I can't find the info but I believe swimming lessons for primary school kids are already outsourced, with the PE teacher present during the lesson. My kids have their swimming lesson in school but I once saw a lesson at Delta Swimming Complex where parent volunteers were present to help the teachers with the kids.

If swimming can be outsourced, so can entire PE lessons. And PE lessons can take a different form - besides the usual physical training to prepare for NAPFA tests, students can be brought to different sports facilities for exposure to different games. Schools cannot all be equipped with squash courts or gym, for instance, and the many well equipped Active SG sports complex will be even better utilised throughout the day.

MOE can still retain curriculum control. The dedicated form teachers can be the school reps present in outsourced classes to be responsible for the kids and external coaches.

Granted, outsourcing would be extra work for school admin - tender or framework agreement under MOE! But if hiring is a perennial challenge, this is a possible solution. More importantly, back to the first idea, it gives the dedicated form teachers more time with their charges, and be more involved in their school life.

That's all, folks!

花好月圆

When we first moved back to HV, the first CC event we attended was Mid Autumn Festival celebrations. We skipped it last year as it was too close to PSLE and we wanted to avoid crowded places. This year, we're back!

Just saw that the 2023 event cost $2 per person. This time, it was free and at the CC hall, i.e. with aircon. There were fewer games and kiddy food. In fact, it seemed more targeted at the elderly as the singalong was full of old songs! But we had fun anyway :)

We were early and were among the first at the Chinese calligraphy booth. I thought we could write but no, they had professionals writing names and blessings. Ah well. Each kid had their own name in gold on red paper.

Sat down for performances while waiting for the gold ink to dry. The sand art was very good! I was eating a hotdog bun so wasn't fast enough to take a picture of a nice Chang E scene.

We were seated quite in front. Emcee called out Yang for a handsome boy and Kai for a tall boy but neither kid would stand - so shy! But they were not shy at the quiz segment - all wanted prizes! Yang didn't get picked to answer though..

Kai won a 大白兔奶糖 metal mug

Yu won a reusable bag - I took it :p

Good to expose them to CC events and to facing a big group to answer questions. Don't be too shy :)

There was a singalong session and the emcee went around the audience with a microphone. I sang a bit of "Fly Me to the Moon" and Yang said it was soooo embarrassing! Hahahaha!

When they were playing 城里的月光,I was reminded of that time in JC (1 or 2?) when we performed this song at a Mid Autumn Festival celebrations. Probably a CLDDS thing. I sang a bit into my phone and sent to Na who was in the performing group, but she didn't remember, haha!

Stilt walkers!

This one was giving out candies. Another one was giving out plushies! I refused to get plushies but Yang and Yu decided to ask for one themselves! Sighs, more dustmite pillows...

Ok, the rabbit mascot looks a bit freaky... Too thin!

Mascot was giving out 大白兔奶糖 so the kids finally saw the rice paper that could be eaten. But Yang didn't have his.

We went for a hotstamping activity just before leaving and oh my, it took a long time! Quite interesting though to see how the kids took part. Kai was more hands off and let the volunteers help. Yang did almost everything himself. Yu was interested to do but looked a bit blur :p Sito and I were like Kai coz we were holding all the random things.

Finally ready to go!

Actually Kai was very tired by then. He went to bed right after showering.

But he was ok to take a little trip to the playground for a photo in the dark

So that was last Saturday. The actual festival fell on Monday, when I realised I forgot to bring out sparklers - bought them years back but didn't finish using...

Anyway, I made mooncakes again! I was rather undecided as the few tries last year yielded skin that turned hard quickly. But I was persuaded by Redman to get yam paste so I had to use it...

It turned out wonderful!!!

The trick is to steam the dough rather than microwave it. Yes, I did a shortcut last year coz the stovetop steamer was a bother. But this year, I have a cute little electric steamer that I use fairly regularly!

Gosh, it was so soft and remained soft in the fridge. We even put a bit to freeze and thaw it to try - soft! That's it.

And the yam paste made it easy to wrap as it didn't melt like ganache. Sito and I discussed a few ways to make different mooncakes. Maybe can try :) Just hope my mould lives longer - the spring mechanism is all rusty after just one year in storage...

Snowskin mooncake - flower print coz 花好月圆 - with glutinous rice tea

That was my fourth yesterday, oops... And it was quite soon after a hotpot dinner coz I was inspired by the big round moon when I sat down in the living room after a shower...

It's a new ritual for us - hotpot on this day. 因为月圆人团圆 :) Hope the kids will find it fun to attend such celebrations and enjoy the hotpot, and eventually grow to appreciate the festival as (another) one to celebrate with family :)

Hungry little boy

From mid August or perhaps earlier, Yang became a hungry little caterpillar boy.

At first, he was hungry at bedtime but decided to go to bed anyway as he had brushed his teeth. But from mid August, he finally decided that he had to eat.

Peanut butter sandwich and milk for supper

Other options are Weetabix, Swiss roll slices and muffins, depending on availability. Once, he had dinner, followed immediately by a muffin and a peanut butter sandwich! And at bedtime, he had a slice of Swiss roll!

Really as if he was going to become a pupa...

I remember Kai eating a lot in P5 as well but it was just three to five (!) packets of three lemon biscuits during tea time. Yang also has two packets of three Oreo biscuits during tea time so he is eating substantially more.

Let's look at growth - 21 June to 1 September:
  • Kai: 170cm / 50kg to 171cm / 54.5kg
  • Yang: 151cm / 40kg to 153cm / 44.9kg
  • Yu: 134cm / 31kg to 135cm / 33.7kg
All of them put on 3-5kg in about two months. Yang put on the most weight. I can’t see where it goes on Kai - perhaps the height. But Yang is visibly meatier despite also growing 1cm. Yu put on weight but not height so Sito said he put on marks instead haha!

So, Yang, when will you become a butterfly? :)

The fun before exam stress

I had wanted to write about the term break but found a lot more photos that hadn't been posted so, let's start from after National Day...

Sito learnt that our fave Japanese BBQ restaurant was closing down by end August so we made a trip there. It happened to be a PSLE oral exam day so Yang and Yu had no school. Kai joined us there directly from school. We had a great time there!

Thanks for the memories, Kintan!

Our induction hob broke down in August. It started one Friday morning in July, when it suddenly couldn't detect my stainless steel pot I was using for barley water. Called for servicing but cancelled it coz I managed to get it to work. Then this happened on and off. I had to bring out our portable hob for hotpot to cook. Eventually, I could no longer get it to work :(

Called for servicing again. Uncle changed the circuit board for a whooping $390, and told us to keep the shelf below open to better dissipate heat and use pans with flat AND even bottoms, not those with circles. So that Saturday, we made a trip to Ikea to shop for new pans. But we're still using some of our old pans coz there are just no alternatives with even bottoms! I really cannot live without my four-hole egg pan...

We had been talking about going to Ikea at Alexander for some time but never got down to it. Finally, we packed our bags and set off! It was a nice walk to Ikea. Yes, we took the rail corridor and walked all the way!

Kai happened to walk alongside me and we had a good chat about school, his feelings towards school, our thoughts after PSLE results and after we saw how he's thriving in secondary school. It had been a long time since we had such a nice chat :)

We left the rail corridor to take a shorter route along the road to Ikea. The kids saw a black bag at the foot of an overhead bridge and said we should report it! I must say national education in school works. Ads also works btw - they keep telling us about random products haha! Anyway, I reported it on the SG Secure app 👍

The kids enjoyed Ikea as usual. We had an early dinner and walked through all the showrooms. The kids just liked to try everything! Also bumped into Kai's classmate.

But the lower floor was harder coz no showrooms. We told the kids to stay in a safe spot and play games on Kai's phone. So Sito and I walked on and picked up our shopping. Then I texted Kai to follow the arrows to the next section, where they played games again while we shopped! This happened a few times until we got to the cashier.

Wanted to take a picture of them playing games - squatting! But no chance

Recently they started playing LEGO beyblades again. Made a mess whenever they wanted to "upgrade" their beyblades. Worse, we found broken grout! This contractor already did a lousy job with the grout. So what did not happened back in the old house after months of beyblade, happened here after just days. I must be zen.... Already extracted a promise from them to dismantle once they got Yu's birthday present from the grands - actual beyblades.

Cannot mop!

One day, Yang came home after tuition to say that he wanted to try the coffeeshop near the centre coz it smelled so good when he passed by! And so we went one day.

It was indeed very good! We were spoilt for choice but the boys had the same old - pork cutlet fried rice for Kai and char siew noodles for the brothers. Sito had the JB fried beehoon and I had duck noodles. And I added Indian rojak which was the cheapest I'd ever had!

Nowadays they get to use Kai's phone after dinner outside

Ah, term break coming... But first, Teachers' Day! Kai wrote a google review for his tuition centre 🤔 Yu decided to write cards. I gave him some coloured cards and stickers, and he did a great job making cards for all his teachers! Yang had some "diamonds" in his school locker which he gave his teachers.

Adding the finishing touches

My hub is very funny. He gets lots of food info from his social media feeds. And this time, it was a free burger from Macs. So he went to get it. The boys were very excited to see a burger for afternoon snack! But each had only a quarter, haha! I had some of Sito's - quite yummy! But Yang thought it was spicy...

Let's try a new burger!

On Teachers' Day itself, we met JY and family at Paradise Hotpot at Vivocity! We were the first in the reservations queue, yeah! We went earlier coz we didn't know the exact spot and 10 of us booked three tables - for five, four and one - as there wasn't another table for five. But the staff arranged it for us :)

Fat face in foreground :p

We decided to bring a term break activity forward since we were very near the destination - cycling at West Coast Park! But we passed by the library and the younger ones wanted to go in for a while.

Chinese Dog Man!

Took a train then a bus

Yu can finally ride a bike!

We had been working with Yang on his oral exams in the past week. He shared personal stories during the practices. I overheard "journey of brothers" when he was doing English with Sito. When I asked Sito, he said Kai coined the term when the three of them went cycling further away from us that day. So cute!!

The brothers

Decided to let them wear dark colours when going to AhMa's place coz they tend to drip ice cream on themselves there! All not focusing coz eyes on TV, body slouching etc.

There happened to be a bedsheets day during the term break. Instead of changing it, I decided to get them to change their own bedsheets. But I cut down the work - didn't wipe windows or desks that day, or even the bed frame. Just changed the bedsheets and pushed back the bed.

These two happily brought their toys to the wash

Kai still has his toys in the cupboard so I don't wash much. He said they're for decoration. I read it as "cannot throw" :p

Last Saturday, we went to Swensen's - yes, again. Sito and I went again on Wednesday to redeem a free main course. We also have free buffet for two which we will redeem after all the exams.

Anyway, we spent enough to get a chance at a human claw machine! One chance so Sito went in. Told him not to grab any soft toys :p So he got chips and vouchers.

Looks like Super Mario!

Also got four tokens for the real claw machines. Kai asked about the chance of grabbing a toy. I gave a random 0.1%. It's really very low! Then he googled some and picked a machine, and voila!

"It's brains!"

The term break ended with the National Inter-school Team Chess Championship. Don't know how that's abbreviated to NST but anyway... Kai put his name down some months ago to form a team with some schoolmates. A parent registered for them. The team (and maybe more) met on Tuesday during the term break to discuss their games.

Kai played board 2 and scored 4.5/6. The team won some and lost some. But we thought they did pretty well. It was a good experience. Think they're already talking about getting more in next year, as two team mates are sec 2 and wouldn't be playing with them in U14 category.

My not-so-little knight

While Sito was with Kai at Pasir Ris for the chess tournament, I was at Ah Yee's place with the brothers. They just hung out with JiuJiu before lunch. I promised them if they behaved well including eating well, I would let them play their phones after lunch. And so they were occupied while I chatted with relatives.

They ran ahead to the playground as I was packing up. But the playground was quiet... Then I saw Yang waving at me from beyond the playground - they were playing giant chess! Apparently the pieces were quite heavy. I stood there for 20min while they played - so tired coz I was carrying a lot of food! But ok la, they were very pleased :)

Yang won but both were happy :)

And with that, we're in term 4 now. Kai had listening compre and Chinese oral this week, and Yang English and Chinese oral. Kai's written exams will start next week. The brothers will have their starting the week after Kai has his last paper. And then there will be a short break before the primary school written exams, by when Kai would have started his term break.

Very short term. A lot to do. All the best to us all!
