A stupid thing, and hopefully a lesson learnt

On Friday, 13 February, Kai's Chinese HOD called me to inform me about a case of leakage of WA questions/answers from the Wednesday batch to the Thursday batch.

Someone in the Thursday batch said Kai was involved. So she approached Kai on Friday morning to ask for a written statement on the matter. Kai wrote a note admitting that he gave the questions and answers to his friend S who was in the Thursday batch. She told me she was surprised at his honesty. But I said honesty had nothing to do with leaking the answers *.*

Anyway, she said many students were involved and the school would conduct its investigation before updating me on the consequences.

We asked Kai about it when he reached home. He told only S who didn't give him away. But Kai heard that another boy mentioned his name somehow. Ah well, he did it so let's just wait for sentencing...

Yesterday, the teacher in charge of exams matter called me to follow up on this. Kai would get (a) zero for that Chinese WA, and (b) a "fair" conduct grade possibly for the year rather than the semester. There were other cases outside of the Kai-S loop and those students would also get zero. Kai also learnt about this yesterday, and had to write a reflection letter.

When he came home, he told us he got 24/30 for his Chinese WA, top in class tied with this boy whom he thought was a good kid. But it would be reflected as zero. He also said some boys got off with a warning. We think teachers probably didn't have evidence that they were involved. Unlike my kid and his friend who had traceable evidence on the school laptop and Google account - he told us yesterday that he and S wrote the answers in a Google doc...!!!! Really 🤦‍♀️

Actually, we were not harsh on him when we first knew about it last month. Only told him to not do such things anymore. Why? This kind of thing has been happening since forever. I remember people sharing "tips" in secondary school. I found it unfair that my classmates who often didn't do as well as me, got tips to score better; whether they really did score better with the tips was not important. But in the first place, why do such tests take place on different days?? There would naturally be big mouths or pressure to share when a friend asked.

I asked Kel. He said something to the effect of not disrupting timetable by taking a week out for WA, leaving it to the integrity of students and taking the chance to correct kids if anyone should cheat. I feel like it's setting the kids up.. Or, some kids. Like mine. Who "helped" a friend. Who in the end still did badly though he passed; he failed Chinese last year.

Fine, I think Kai really needs to learn. No better time to learn than when he's still a kid.

But when we heard about the Google doc, Sito really scolded him - for being stupid on top of doing something wrong that did not benefit him or his intended beneficiary.

We accepted the consequence meted out by the school without contest since Kai really did something wrong. Rather he learn this lesson now than later. This is only Sec 2 and for internal exams, and the penalties are, in the grand scheme of things, inconsequential.

But for a kid in school, these penalties are painful. And the zero was even more painful coz he scored so well. Also, with that conduct grade, he would not be able to get an Edusave award even if he continues to do well like last year. He likes his money :p

So yes, very painful. We really hope he would remember this pain and the lesson, and know what to do and what not to do in future.

Anyway, we made it clear that he should not give - or receive - answers. He has already proven to himself that he can do well all on his own merit. If this happens again, we would not be so kind. And of course, no stupid business, please!

We also shared this with the brothers with his knowledge. We can learn from each other's mistakes. This is called 前车之鉴。

Yu won awards!

We were so pleasantly surprised to receive PG notifications on 5 February about Yu getting two awards at Founders' Day - Young ACSian and academic - for his work last year. Later, Yu told us the latter was for the top three in class. As he knows his classmates' grades, we know he was third.

He went for a rehearsal during school hours and told me he would receive both medals at the same time. I thought it would be better to have the kids go up separately for different awards but oh well.

So we had a logistics issue - Yu had to be in school by 8.15am, Yang in school by 11.45am to catch the bus to the stadium for Founders' Day 140 celebration and Kai to the stadium directly by 12.45 pm.

Gave them all a simple breakfast - we left with Yu just before 7.30 am when Kai just woke and Yang was still asleep. When we came home, all the plates were on the kitchen counter instead of in the sink as instructed, grrr... But at least they locked the door properly and turned off lights etc when they left...

Yu saw a friend the moment we walked into the school. After a trip to the toilet, he walked with a friend away from us - 不告而别!We caught up with him to say bye bye before he went to report to the concert hall.

Sito and I ate breakfast in the school canteen. Only two food stalls and one drink stall were open. Good enough since there was chicken rice. We were prepared to run out to buy macs! :p

Bumped into AT whose younger boy is in P5; JY/JD just bumped into him two days ago at the hawker centre so we call him a celeb - take picture show each other, hoho!

Didn't manage to get seats in the centre block so our own photos aren't too great. But they had professionals take photos and print out for the kids, yeah!

Congrats, my 圆圆!

It had been a long time since we sang the National Anthem and said the Pledge in school, accompanied by sekolah sedia! And I also heard the school song for the first time, as in properly sung with accompaniment.

The awards ceremony ended way earlier than the 11 am expected. But Kai and Yang also left the house very early. We spent some time looking for Yang in the canteen but the boy went to 7-11 with a friend on the same bus! Yu got changed in the meantime and then I remembered that I should have taken a photo of him and his medals first *.*

But it was very messy. Butterfly has friends, must go to classroom (for what?) and walk around. Sito and I were looking for Yang. Then they must queue up for lunch.

Yang admiring Yu's medals

Yang said he wished he had medals. Hey, must study way harder leh...

Watching the video that Papa took of Yu receiving his awards

Anyway... We left them to roam the school just past 11 am, and came back to our hawker centre for our lunch.

They're all at the stadium now. Will be home rather late - ACSP alone has over 40 buses ferrying the kids, teachers and volunteers between school and stadium! Just leaving the stadium or just getting into the transport centre would take an hour each?! So Kai should be home first..

Three different awards for our three boys

I didn't realise back in December but at the awards ceremony on Saturday, I realised that the boys did a clean sweep of the three Edusave academic awards.

I wonder if I would ever see all three getting awards together again... I already told Yang that it would be challenging to get the good progress award again next year so if he wanted an award, he had to be in at least top 25%.

So this photo is very precious!

My boys look so smart in uniform!

We were in session 11 of 17, hoho! Our MP's speech this year sounded more serious.. Maybe coz he's in Mindef now, vs. MOE last year...

And so we had a Mindef booth this year, and the boys had fun!

Looking smart too, haha! It's not clear from the photos but Yang had a backpack on as well. Yu found the vest rather heavy for him. Btw, the white thing sticking out of the helmet/hat is a hairnet, for hygiene reasons as many people wore those headgear.

Decorating pens with fancy beads

I asked them if they would decorate pens for me. Nope, they were doing it for themselves *.* I didn't ask them to make more for me coz they really took their time doing it... Families from the next session were coming out before we were able to leave...

There were also free books and Yang chose a chemistry book! Sito and I got supermarket vouchers from the IMDA booth by doing surveys - uncle and auntie haha!

This year, besides the bag for the certs, I threw a foldable shopping bag into my purse based on our past experience, and indeed it came in useful to carry souvenirs and various snacks. Yang and Yu as expected chose fluffy SAF bears bigger than my hand while Kai chose a blind box containing a bear smaller than my hand.

Must end the day with Macs

They were telling me about the nuggets lohei a few days before that. They saw the ad on TV. But we decided it wasn't worth it. And I had free nuggets coz it's my birthday month!

Anyway, just got alerts from bank today about their Edusave money coming in; their accounts are tied to mine for now. They'll be happy to know :)

I'm 46! Or 47?

I was rather confused on Saturday morning. I was washing my face when I thought how odd it was that I was 47yo in a PSLE year. I mean, our whole family was born in even years. PSLE takes place in the year we turn 12. I should be of even age in PSLE years!

Then I realised I got the year wrong. It's 2026, not 2027!

Or maybe I was thinking about starting my 47th year right just a couple of days before that..

Or signs of dementia?

Anyway, I'm 46. And this is my 47th year.

On my birthday on Thursday, Sito brought me to Pancakes and Friends at Far East Plaza for souffle pancakes. It was a cosy little place with minimal staff so our intended brunch became an early lunch! But the food was good - we shared a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, and a Hokkaido milk gelato pancakes with muesli. The pancakes were so wobbly! Calories were so worth it...

Half a bagel each for my Laogong and me

Sito already bought a cake on Wednesday while I was lunching with Jo at her place. He just told me this morning that he had wanted to buy me a laptop - the one I'm now typing on is refusing to charge! But he could not surprise me coz I need to choose the colour, plus it's better that I buy with my Shopee account as I'm a Shopee VIP :p

But I do have a present of sorts... We bought a new fridge in December and it arrived almost a month later on Wednesday. We spent the afternoon cleaning it inside out. On Thursday morning, I shifted things from our old fridge to the new fridge. On Friday, I cleaned and reorganised the old fridge. SOOOOOO happy, ok... That's it. It's my birthday present, 70% paid by Ah Gong's climate vouchers :p

Anyway, after the pancakes, we headed to Bibi and Baba to get uniforms for Yang and Yu. Yang's pants were bursting at the seams - he has grown so much in the past year! His waist measures 75cm vs. Kai's 66cm 小蛮腰 ok, don't play play... Actually we bought him one larger pair in May last year but he refused to wear it as it had a button instead of a hook clasp at the top of the zip. But now he has no choice!

Their corporate tees are also rather fitting now. They look like bah zang especially the belly part. Again, Yang is going one size bigger than Kai at this age. Yu has always maintained the same shape - round - so it's kind of expected... His waist measures 65cm now. I shall see if he can wear Yang's clothes in a couple of years' time...

After a protein top-up from Old Chang Kee and a short rest with milk tea at MOS at Ion, we made our way to school. While Yu's start-of-year PTM on Tuesday was online, Yang's was F2F. Maybe coz he's P6. Kai's PTM end of the month would be F2F too - preparing for Sec 2 streaming...

Once we got to school, I went to queue at the bookshop. We already bought most of their textbooks from Popular in December but some were only available in schools. While I settled the books, Sito went to find the kids. Kai had texted us earlier to say he was getting food but the brothers couldn't be found! Eventually, Sito found them playing on the slope... He ushered Yang over to me but Yu had left for his HCL class.

After I was done with the books, Yang decided on a second lunch. He "gave me a treat" at the drinks stall :p The coffee from this drink stall was nicer than the other one but he didn't like his Milo as it tasted like tea. So he went to the other drink stall to get another Milo.

We just sat around to wait for Papa and Yu. Watched some videos together :) Kai was seated near us but with his friends, playing chess.

Playing with a Sec 1, who happened to be Yang's track and field friend

When Yu was done with his HCL, he came to find us and saw a kid go into the bookshop even though it was barricaded for textbooks during this period. I told him that the kid asked the auntie for permission to go in so he did the same. He came out of the bookshop with a pretty pink pencil for me :) We couldn't figure out how it works though. It took him two tries to eventually find out from the bookshop how to use the pencil - turned out it was an infinity pencil, so cool!

The PTM started late - and hence ended late - due to traffic jams as that day was also CCA open house for the secondary school kids. Sito said parents asked better questions in person. He asked about difficulty level of their P5 exams last year vs. PSLE standards and learnt that they were set at SEAB standards. Apparently, schools had to submit P3-6 papers to SEAB for sampling - too hard, too easy etc. He also noticed that Yang was bigger than many of his classmates - some went to the PTM with parents...

When Sito came back to the canteen, Yang and Yu were watching Kai playing chess. By then, they were tired and needed no ushering to leave. When we got home, Sito packed dinner for them and left for Bras Basah to get a book for Kai as it was out of stock at the bookshop. Bishan Popular didn't have it when we got their books...

Chess on the phone

I had some leftover chicken stock in the fridge and made myself some mee sua with eggs and frozen dumplings. Actually I tried to start a ritual of having mee sua for birthdays but the kids weren't too keen on it... Anyway, while waiting for Sito to come back and while waiting for the noodles to cool down, I managed to sew nametags on the new corporate tees. It's a chore...

Managed to cut the cake just before their bedtime!

Awww, I love how Kai put his head on me in this photo! This is the boy who refuses to let me hug or kiss him since P3... But sometimes, I think starting from Beijing, he would hug me to 哄妈妈 when I get upset and well, yes, I buy it... Sucker.

:p

Yesterday, we had a second celebration with the grands. The cake was so yummy but I couldn't stomach a second piece... And dinner was at Peach Blossoms - a la carte buffet. Second time there. Managed to have more variety this time with more adults. But there was a lot of food coz they didn't give us small portions as requested but portions for eight persons *.* But the kids don't eat most of the food!

Looks like a kiddy birthday though!

Took a slow walk back home, made even slower by the playground and exercise corner along the way. These monkeys can really make my heart race... I'm just glad the playground downstairs is a lot less scary than this one!

Love this shot of Yang! We were just talking about the trees on the building on the way there

All three on the 独木桥

So that's it for this year... But the cake doesn't end here.. I had wanted a Marks and Spencer chocolate cake for my birthday but it wasn't available so we will try to get it next week or so! Yay to cake!

Oh, Yay to getting old too! Don't mind mf looking old, heh! I found more white hair recently, probably due to tutoring Yang in Chinese in December... Also don't mind the colour but I mind that white hair is typically curlier?! Sighs.. Also yay to more rebonding then...!

Congrats to all my boys!

Update 26 December

Guess what, Yang got the Good Progress Award! We're so happy for him! He's very happy too!

Now I look at the dates:
  • Kai's letter was dated 28 November; we received 9 December
  • Yu's dated 4 December; we retrieved 11 December; Na received her son's on 9 December
  • Yang's dated 5 December; we retrieved 26 December
Lesson? Study hard, and open the letterbox more often than every two weeks!

*** *** ***

Original post, unedited:

Since we moved to HV, Yang and Yu open the letterbox every Friday on their way home, as we have changed the lock to a digital one - easy and fun to do. So during holidays, we tend to forget to check our letterbox :p

But Sito was browsing Xiaohongshu and saw parents humblebragging talking about their kids' Edusave awards and so he opened the letterbox on Tuesday on his way home from sending Kai to the National Age Group Chess Championship.

Surprise! Kai has received an Edusave Scholarship for being in the top 10%! 🥳 Ok, maybe not totally unexpected as he studied hard on his own and did well in his WAs and exams.

Since he was busy with chess, we didn't tell him the good news until he came home. After reading the letter, he swept his hair up from his forehead and went, "I'm so smart!"

Hahaha! This boy can be so full of himself that it's funny!

But later, we realised he thought this was among the whole of Singapore. Eh hello, your school la. Then he wasn't as pleased; he has this 情节 about his school... Maybe coz he thought he didn't make it to ACS (Ind)... And so we had to do some education....

Yes, he went to ACS (Br) via affiliation route with his PSLE score of AL15. We know at least for his batch that the school didn't hit the 80% cap for affiliated kids, which means that more than 20% - just not sure how much more - of his peers entered the school at PSLE score of max AL10.

He has beaten more than half of these max AL10 kids to get his top 10%. And that is something to be proud of, especially since he did it all on his own - he finished his homework on time; he studied hard for WAs and exams; he dutifully went for English tuition and did the extra bits at home; he let me go through his Chinese textbook with him.

All these he did with little reminders from us, though the Chinese he did somewhat grudgingly and so that he wouldn't need to go for tuition. He came to us only in areas he wasn't sure about or good at (like factorisation at first) and to ask Papa to test him, coz we didn't get any papers for secondary school.

So Kai was settled.

Yang and Yu were both there when Sito and I opened Kai's letter. Yang lamented that he had never had an award :( Yu was quite confident he would get it again - so yaya *.* Then later that afternoon, Na told me she got the letter for her son who's the same age as Yu. Indeed, Sito opened the letterbox again today on his way home from getting lunch and there it was, Yu's letter.

Yu was pleased but was a bit sian he wouldn't know whether he was in the top 10% like GeGe. But same boy also told me last night that he didn't think he would do as well as GeGe coz he wouldn't study on his own like him *.*

Anyway, my initial happy thoughts for Yu very quickly became sad thoughts for Yang. I was hoping he could get the Good Progress Award, like Kai did at this level, as he had improved from P4. But alas, that was not to be...

So we told him that we would give him something to reward him for his improvement. Actually, Yang is the one who had put in the most effort this year. Unlike Kai who was left alone to manage his own studies, Yang was given lots of work and personalised supervision from both Sito and me. Unlike Yu who resists work, Yang even asked for more work in synthesis and transformation which he was weak in, and he really improved after working through loads of exercises!

In the end, MOE awards are just one part of the ecosystem of recognition for students. If the kid has improved or has simply put in his best, parents could and should recognise it too.

So yes, we'll congratulate all three of them for their efforts and achievements! We'll think of something for Yang by the time of the award ceremony early next year...

Kai's cooking

I’d been waiting for this day but when Kai pulled a plastic bag of some soggy thing out of his pocket after school one day in early July, I was quite appalled…

Guess what he made for his first kitchen session?

Yes, omelette tortilla wrap. The tortilla had gone all soggy in the plastic bag. He was supposed to bring a box but he either forgot about the kitchen session or didn't know. I didn't think he brought his apron and towels too...

Anyway, he didn’t want to eat it. I have a weak stomach.. Papa gamely ate it all and said it was good! Best part - Kai asked me if I had reheated it to 60degrees - so I guess food safety education was well done??

Back in our time, boys didn't have home economics. But I remember my brother bringing home some food he made. Don't know if it was still called home economics then but now it certainly isn't. It's called food and consumer education (FCE) now. Think that means no more sewing? I broke my mother's sewing machine more than once haha!

Potato patties

Kai doesn't like potato except as fries or hashbrowns so he didn't eat his food again... It was nicer when we toasted it as it wasn't fried enough.

Cinnamon and banana muffin

This was so good! I think I can replicate it one day. I love cinnamon stuff :) But of course our boy wouldn't have it.

Fried rice

This, he had. Yummy fried rice with a tad too much chicken powder haha! So after that, I scrambled my eggs like this for fried rice. Also tried added chicken stock to the fried rice. Now Kai would praise my fried rice when he sees my eggs scrambled like this 💕

Exam piece - a reprise of the tortilla wrap

See, less soggy with the box! But no, he still wouldn't have it!

Some cheese puffs?

Like the potato patties, these didn't really have a name. Or Kai couldn't give us a proper name. Just a mish-mash of ingredients he used. But these were really nice with a quick toast!

So that's his Sec 1 kitchen experience. I had never expected him to make waves in the kitchen, and this is reinforced after the above. Not that the food wasn't good, but that he just wasn't interested and found kitchen sessions a bother. Ah well... Lucky for him that food is easily accessible in Singapore!

I compare his kitchen sessions to mine back in 1993-4. Really 小巫见大巫 but I guess cooking skills aren't terribly essential nowadays??

Back then, it was also pair work but each pair worked on two items rather than the same item. We started with a simple orange cordial - don't laugh, need to boil ok... Then there was fried rice of course. But we also had prawn toast. And once there was a whole fish! I couldn't gut the fish but a friend at the next table came to the rescue 👍

I guess some kids are just better at cooking than others.. Or at least, more interested. Today, Kai went to a friend's place to play after lunch, before the two of them headed off to Bishan for a chess tournament in the evening, actually happening now as I type. This was the first time he travelled to an unfamiliar place on his own - plenty of text messages along the way, very cute :)

Anyway, his friend A cooked fried noodles for him! We were so impressed.. It will be late when he comes home tonight. Tmr, I shall ask him if he feels inspired by his friend to get wokking at home!

If I were an educator...

Sito met some friends for dinner recently some weeks ago. One topic came up - education. Two of us had a brief discussion over breakfast. I want to put down some thoughts here.

Two ideas:

1) Dedicated form teachers

Why:

Two reasons - (a) reducing admin of teaching staff for the staff's benefit, and (b) having a main teacher who truly knows the form kids for the kids' benefit:

a) This started off from the topic of flexi-adjunct teachers. The work scope is to be agreed upon between the school and the teacher. So the teacher could effectively just teach, no CCA etc. And they're apparently free to teach tuition unlike MOE teachers.

That sounds a lot more attractive than to be a regular MOE teacher with all the admin, CCA and committee work (e.g. organise children's day cele) on top of teaching responsibilities.

Over the years, we've heard of teaching staff being burdened by admin. The recent findings from the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey showed that full-time teachers in Singapore spent four hours a week on admin work, above the OECD average of three hours.

I don't know what this admin work entails but I think there is bound to be some amount of admin no matter what. I thought things should be much better these days with the PG app. Perhaps the admin pertains more to the lower primary kids and even Sec 1 kids coz new to school, new to a lot of things?

Actually, as I write, I think this dedicated form teachers idea is more for the kids' benefit, haha! Ok, I move on...

b) During my school years, the form teachers taught the whole class at least one subject, spent a lot of time with us be it teaching in the classroom or taking attendance at the assembly area. Think we also had this thing called contact time or something.

Now?

Let me consider this in the primary school context, as I'm more familiar with this level.

Kai had three form teachers in P5-6, and only one of them taught him. The other two taught the GEP kids in his form class - his was a mixed form class comprising mainstream and GEP kids who are in different classes for English, Maths and Science. So none of three form teachers knew all kids equally well. After they changed the format from parents-teachers meeting to parent-child-teachers-conference involving only the form teachers, we couldn't really get much out of the session.

Oh, and now with subject-based banding in secondary schools, Kai's form class has G1-3 kids so the form teachers do not teach all the kids unless they teach DnT, FCE, music, art or PE.

Back to primary school. Yang is in a mainstream class (i.e. no GEP kids) and Yu is still in lower primary, but it's a 50-50 chance that their form teachers teach them in any subject at all coz students are split into groups for the four academic subjects. Based on what the kids told me and parent chat groups, there are usually two groups - one regular and one for those who need more help. For Chinese, I have seen four different spelling lists so could be four groups - foundation (from P5 onwards), 核心班,深广班 and higher Chinese.

I don't know if they split the 核心班 into regular and those who need more help... But I know that for any subject, those who need a lot more help would be offered remedial after school - I asked for English remedial for Yang and was told it was to help those scoring below 40% 😱

The kids then take all the non-examinable subjects together as a class, with the exception of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) which is taught in mother tongue languages.

So if the form teacher teaches non-examinable subjects, lucky for the kids coz the main teacher actually teaches them and has more time to know them. Otherwise, it's as good as having no form teachers.

Idea:

Since form teachers already may not teach their form kids, why not have a dedicated form teacher for each class, supported by a subject-form teacher? This would be similar to P1 and P2, where the form teachers teach all the kids and know them very well.

There are already designated slots for Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) and Programme for Active Learning (PAL) in the timetable, currently taken by the form teachers. A dedicated form teacher can also take on some subjects common to all students, e.g. Social Studies and even PE - see my next point far below. Music and art may be challenging... But well, see below too..

Further, academic teachers need to complete the curriculum. The form teachers can devote more time to psychological and social wellbeing, and be the kids' cheerleaders in school. They work at a manageable ratio of 1:30-40, compared to the one or two school counsellors who cannot possibly be everywhere. Students are probably more familiar with their form teachers too. Of course, serious cases will still need to be referred to counsellors.

Ultimately, the aim is to have someone who is the main point of contact for the kids, who know everything about them be it academic or otherwise, who will find out more about them from other subject teachers, who will liaise with parents and the community when necessary. The dedicated form can follow their classes as they progress through the school, like how the kids don't change classes from P1 to P2 and from P5 to P6. As such, they become sort of a surrogate parent in school, which could be very beneficial for the kids.

While this would require significant additional manpower resources, such resources may be quite different from the usual teaching requirements which require a degree in maths to teach it, for instance. I would argue that this may not require a degree but someone with the heart to guide young people.

2) Review teaching for non-academic subjects

Apparently, it is difficult to hire teachers for certain subjects like music, art and PE. Even the languages - not just mother tongue but also English.

Ok, put the languages aside - maybe I'll talk about them another day coz I sometimes imagine myself a Chinese teacher, haha!

I took a look at Kai's timetable, which is in a document with the timetables for all classes. There are as many PE teachers as there are classes per level but only about three each for music and art. I think it's coz there are more periods of PE per week vs. the other two subjects. It's similar for the primary school kids based on the teacher list online.

Now, music, art and PE require some technical knowledge. Not everyone can teach them properly - and safely too when it comes to PE. So they are not easily replaced. But truth be told, apart from the handful of MEP/AEP kids and those taking lessons outside school*, how well can we expect kids to do in the aesthetics?

* Somehow, many kids learn piano in Singapore... How many truly enjoy it? Yang tried a few months and stopped coz not interested anymore.

Look at me - love to sing, yes, but can't read notes or play any instrument. Yup, not even the recorder that we were made to play in school. And don't talk about my art.

Kai had a music WA last term which required him to write notes and play a tune on a digital keyboard. He has probably forgot all about it right after that.

For the aesthetics, I think it is more important to expose the kids and teach appreciation. There are many music and art enrichment schools out there. Why not outsource the aesthetics? I can't find the info but I believe swimming lessons for primary school kids are already outsourced, with the PE teacher present during the lesson. My kids have their swimming lesson in school but I once saw a lesson at Delta Swimming Complex where parent volunteers were present to help the teachers with the kids.

If swimming can be outsourced, so can entire PE lessons. And PE lessons can take a different form - besides the usual physical training to prepare for NAPFA tests, students can be brought to different sports facilities for exposure to different games. Schools cannot all be equipped with squash courts or gym, for instance, and the many well equipped Active SG sports complex will be even better utilised throughout the day.

MOE can still retain curriculum control. The dedicated form teachers can be the school reps present in outsourced classes to be responsible for the kids and external coaches.

Granted, outsourcing would be extra work for school admin - tender or framework agreement under MOE! But if hiring is a perennial challenge, this is a possible solution. More importantly, back to the first idea, it gives the dedicated form teachers more time with their charges, and be more involved in their school life.

That's all, folks!

Mid year report

The year started with a flurry of activities and lots of uncertainty as our firstborn entered Sec 1. Now, the first two terms are over.

I'm happy to see Kai thriving in secondary school.

Yes, he can still be quite blur when it comes to organising himself. First, we taught him to use the calendar to remind him of all the WA dates. Later, we had to tell him to check emails, Google classroom and WhatsApp etc regularly for updates on academic, school and CCA matters, AND update us if he needs to stay back in school etc.

And sometimes, he's just stubborn about things, or overly worried. Like D&T. His team creation did not work, and so he didn't take a picture *.* His team mate didn't bother. So we discussed and guided him on what to do. In the end, he asked an old friend for a photo to show in his assignment what it could have looked like and explained why it didn't work or something like that. It worked.

But he has been fantastic at homework and revision - we seldom had to nag him to do them, at most a reminder or a quick check on whether he had finished them.

In term 1, Kai forgot to study for his science WA. I think that worked him up for revision in term 2! In the end, he did very well for semester 1, with L1R4 of 10. His English alone was C6 so plenty of room for improvement. He knows that as well. Overall, we are all very pleased with his achievements this semester :)

Inserted para 8 June: While reviewing his 1A Chinese this week, he told me that his secret weapon was his own 笔记本 where he records phrases and terms for reference. He said he was forced to do this in P3. In P4, he wasn't sure if he needed to do this so he just did it. And the habit continued! I didn't even know!

We wondered if his lacklustre PSLE results gave him motivation to do better in secondary. If so, well, the PSLE results are super good then! In the grand scheme of things, PSLE is the least important exam.

There were two parts to his MTP - meet the parents session. Morning sessions were for teachers who wanted to meet parents. Afternoon sessions were for parents who requested to meet teachers.

We didn't get a "see me" note (haha!) which means he's doing fine. All teachers except English sent out PG blasts to parents to book afternoon slots. In particular, his literature teacher encouraged parents not to be too hard on the kids as this was their first attempt at literature - so nice!

We only wanted to meet his English teacher. Had to email his form teachers to find his email. Turned out that he's a relief teacher for the term as the original teacher in term 1 was on maternity leave. But she would be back in term 3.

Anyway, it's the same old - read. And the teacher also shared with us funny things that Kai did in class. Mainly about his social awareness. Um, like Sito said, a triangle is a triangle; we can only soften the edges...

Besides academics, he also did well in chess - his participation in NSI has been noted down in his report slip; now, they all keep report books at home and bring back the slips to file themselves. He's also participating in chess tournaments outside to gain experience even though he has been losing ratings overall. As long as he is interested, and can put his academics first, we will support his chess endeavours!

Things he made in D&T

Now, Yang. He did worse in term 2 than in term 1. We feel for him as he really worked very hard with us since the beginning of the year. He's such a sweet boy that it's hard to see him being disappointed after putting in so much effort :(

We asked his form teachers, also his Chinese and science teachers, at his PCTC - parents child teacher conference - how he was in school and how we could help him. He seems to have difficulty focusing. Sito has started meditating with Yang before bedtime. Hopefully that could help Yang over time.

The good thing this semester is his constipation issue - with track and field as his CCA, he exercised and drinks more water. So he has been pooping twice a week quite consistently now. In the past few(er) times that the toilet was clogged, I found that the poop was softer, just big. So it looks like his issue is a big balloon (rectum, as referred to in a video on constipation) which will take time to shrink. Will continue to work on this health issue.

Finally, Yu. He had his first WAs this year, and so far, he has performed consistently good. But he failed Chinese compo in class a couple of times *.* Need to watch that bit if he wants to meet his goal of getting AL4 for exams this year. This boy has high expectations of himself... We shall see...

He also took beginner Malay in term 2 and practised a bit with YeePo fortnightly. A bit :p At the end, he asked if he could take intermediate Malay. Sure, if he's interested and can be motivated to study on his own, coz parents could not help at all! Then this boy said he wanted to take it so that he could play with his Malay class friends during lunch..!!!

At his PCTC, he was a different person! Quite unlike Yang who was still his usual self though less loud :p Yu said he was shy. Ha! Let him portray a 乖乖 image in school ba!

With results slips and after speaking with teachers, we started the term break with a trip to the science centre!

Birdly!

Need to wear a mask before putting on the headset

It's VR that allows users to feel like a bird! I "flew" very near MBS, helix bridge, floating platform, SG flyer etc. So cool to see them from height.

The boy who is not yet 1.4m for Birdly went to fight viruses in the same hall

Hahaha!

Us two retirees mostly sat around after Birdly. The kids are familiar enough with the place to roam on their own. Kai had his phone with him so it was convenient for us to find them too.

First laser maze experience

He asked if he did it like mission impossible, complete with the music. Eh, no way, boy. You crossed the laser beams four times, means can die four times in MI!

One of the last things we did was competing with AI to guess a drawing. Just nice five seats. We took turns to draw and guess. The AI is quite cool, able to detect writing under scribbles, and understand Chinese and hanyu pinyin!

Just nice for five of us

Must try bubble tea robot outside science centre!

It was very cool to see the robot hands make our drink. The strawberry tea was yummy too and marked a nice end to our trip..

But no, we were not done yet. Went to eat and shop for Japanese curry roux.

Long time no eat Paradise Dynasty!

But no, they were not done yet. After three bowl of noodles and 20 xlb, they each had a hotdog bun from Ikea. Kai topped it with soy ice cream from Ikea too. On the way home, we found that OCK at the MRT station had reopened after renovations, and got them all some OCK. Back home, they had snacks while watching TV. Why are they still slim??!

Kai is now quite thin. I think it is due to him having more lunches in school. Canteen food for sure isn't protein heavy. He's missing out on all my double cheese burgers! Must build him up in June :) Yang has been gaining height and weight - he feels more chunky these days. Yu still eats very well so no issue, ha!

So there, mid year report on the Sito boys. We will still work hard during the term break, but we will also play hard hard! Hope for good weather :)

New CCA for all

On 9 January, Sito and I went to school for a talk for Sec 1 parents. It was the usual, but it was followed by a CCA fair.

We met all three in the canteen when they were dismissed at 1.30 pm for lunch. Yang was to wait at the canteen while Yu attended his Higher Chinese extra lesson and the remaining three went for the CCA fair.

Kai eating rubbish for lunch *.*

Now, while their primary school allows kids to explore CCAs on a recreational basis, secondary school CCAs are a different ball game. Cannot just be recreational. Sports means school team. Everything has a competition or something.

If the school has chess, it would be easy. But it doesn't. We had gone through the CCA options with Kai based on information on the school website. But he wasn't terribly interested in anything. We shortlisted a few for him to seek out the booths to ask questions.

At the fair, we started off walking around but Kai wasn't very into it. So Sito tasked him to go to the booths himself and come back to tell us details etc. We just stood at one side or checked out the booths on our own. Some kids also came up to us to tell us about their CCA. At one point, I told a kid to tell Kai, not tell me :p

Eventually, Kai signed up for four trials: basketball, badminton, track and field, and NPCC. We also filled up a form to inform the school of his interest in chess; we have already signed him up for the National Schools Individual Championship next week.

Going home after CCA fair - rare sight of them four (and me) on the bridge!

The trials started after LNY. He was told he didn't make it for basketball on the spot. He wasn't super keen on it but still felt bad. So that was a lesson in failure, gone through at lunch and again before his bedtime.

The next two trials were badminton and track/field. He didn't know the outcome immediately. But he said track/field was very tiring so even if he got in, he wasn't too keen. My son is a sedentary creature...

The last trial was NPCC. It seemed like more of an intro session than trial. They did some drills. Kai came back to say he loved it. Love ok, not just like.

So it was good that he was eventually allocated his first choice - NPCC.

It was his first session yesterday. We knew it started at 3pm but had no idea when it would end. We kept stalking him using the Find My app. He finally came home at 6.45 pm.

So they had drills for some two hours. While the Sec 1s were in PE attire, the seniors were all in uniform. But they got their measurements ytd too so I suppose they would get their uniforms soon. Will post pictures later :)

As for his brothers, their CCAs started on the 15th day of LNY :p Yang came back to say track/field was fun, yeah! So happy that he enjoyed it! He ran like 10 rounds in the auditorium - with aircon, haha!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed but it seems that since he started track/field, his poop became more frequent than every 10 days! Probably a combi of vigorous exercise and more water? 🤞

On the other hand, Yu said robotics was boring - just talking. This was after he was so excited at getting this CCA. I told him there would probably be more hands-on stuff after the first intro session..

But it was still boring the second week. Finally, they got to build things from the third week and he was happy! He also asked for the Lego set - um, very expensive... Let's see how it goes...

The curious incident of the water bottles

I realised I didn't write about this. Probably busy then and forgot.

Kai lost - and found - three water bottles in P5. First was on Thursday, 19 Oct 2023. He took a sip during maths and put it back in the side pocket of his bag. Then when he wanted his bottle again during the same maths lesson, it was gone.

Second was the next day, when he brought Yu's spare bottle. He came back from recess to find it gone from his bag. He didn’t bring it out for recess. He looked for his bottle in the general office and even under almost every desk in his classroom but to no avail. I wrote to the form teachers that day but didn't hear back from them.

Someone must have taken this bottles. So we told him to keep his next bottle in the main compartment of his bag. No problem for a few days until Friday, 27 October, when it was stolen again - when he returned from recess, his zipped bag was open and the bottle gone. His classmate E told him that he knew where the bottles were hidden but later said he knew nothing.

This time, I cc-ed the principal when I emailed his form teachers. This was clearly theft born out of mischief or bullying. It was water bottles today and it could be other things like his notes tomorrow. One of the teachers replied early the next day that they would investigate.

On 31 October, Kai said that a form teacher addressed the theft that morning. He also said L told him where his bottles were and he retrieved them. Apparently, the culprit told L about it.

On 1 November, a form teacher emailed to say that the teachers had addressed the issue at the class level, and had also identified and spoken to one of the students involved. Besides getting the students involved to apologise to Kai, the school would also mete out consequences.

We heard similar from Kai when he came home from CCA that day. So, S took the first two bottles coz Kai had annoyed him! S owned up to the teachers after the form teacher addressed the class.

We had already discussed with Kai about possible reasons for the theft, and agreed that if he had annoyed his classmate to such as extent, he should apologise to him as well.

So that day, those two boys apologised to each other.

There was no closure at all on the third bottle. No reason for S to admit to two and not three so it was probably another kid. Probably a copycat coz it was hidden together with the first two bottles. We were just happy to get the bottles back.

Even better, this incident had a good learning point for Kai (hopefully be less annoying?!) and a good outcome for both boys - they became good friends, haha! They eventually went to different Sec 1 classes in the same school, and still met online and virtually to play chess.

Really a case of 不打不相识!

Update on the new school year

After a week plus of orientation, Kai's lessons finally started on 13 January. How pleasantly surprised we were to hear that he likes secondary school! Coz the teacher taught fast and the classmates didn't talk all the time. Hmmm...

Unlike in primary school, he seems to have more homework these days. He's quite independent and can do his own work until he faces difficulties. Then it's "Papa! Papa!" or "Mama! Mama!" from his room, regardless of where we are...

His first major assignment was a writeup for LNY, in preparation for Chinese WA. It was a nightmare in general knowledge, organisation and expression. Told him he couldn't just copy whole passages from his research. So he translated that into English, and back-translated into Chinese instead of using his own words! Must applaud his ingenuity but please, really work on expressing yourself in Chinese!

Kai also started having English tuition after a trial on Saturday, 11 January. It was at Bishan Central but in the end, we chose the Monday evening slot at the Junction 8 branch instead. It turned out that we had to change to Saturdays for two weeks in January due to his camp and a reunion dinner...

Happy with a kabab roll from pasar malam after tuition

The brothers had their usual "Care Week" and started lessons same day as Kai. But I think they started on some lessons here and there before that...

This year, they come home on their own Monday to Wednesday as Kai's day ends at 2.30 pm for those days. So I also cook less lunch coz Kai would have lunch in school at 2.30 pm. I wonder why they don't give a lunch break and end school later. The lunch timing is really bad... In fact, with such a late lunch and with recess also late at 11 am, I started making breakfast for Kai. Then his brothers wanted breakfast too so I think I end up cooking way more *.*

They sent me a photo taken with the smart watch while waiting for the bus home one day

We started drilling working with Yang every day after school. Sito would go through all subjects except Chinese, to reinforce what he has learnt that day. I was pleasantly surprised that he took all this in his stride. I mean, he complained a great deal last year when doing papers... But for the past few weeks, he has been listening to Papa and doing his work.

As for Chinese, he really doesn't like it... But no choice, especially when he just came back yesterday with 10/40 for a compo! We went through the relevant topic and he even told me the whole story based on the pictures one day before the class assignment. But he hardly wrote beyond the first two pictures in the end. He said he was thinking what to write until he ran out of time.

Sito told him to describe each picture again before doing his correction, which was to copy out a model compo. Wasn't well done. I think he didn't know how to write the words and couldn't express himself properly in the language... He's away at camp now. Will work with him later...

Yang also started English tuition yesterday evening. After our experience with Kai, we decided to take the plunge and start Yang early. Hope this can help improve his English - he still has a spelling issue but at least need to nail his grammar and S&T and compre etc.

Sito sent him and waited for him there. The tutor said he was very active in class! When I asked him about it, he said he couldn't sit for two hours, Jialat! But this social butterfly had already spoken with all six or seven boys, but not the two girls... So free in class?!

Good big brother to his only DiDi

As for Yu, he had his first HCL extra class on 9 January. Then he regretted taking HCL coz more time in school, haha! Too late, my dear. Must take whole year before I allow you to drop!

As we focus more on Yang, Yu hasn't had much to do so far. Anyway, he is more like Kai, can do his work independently. So when he has nothing to do, he sleeps or plays with soft toys or helps me with housework.

Bia-ing homework at AhMa's place on Sunday coz he forgot to do earlier

Washing grapes

They all need to choose their CCA. More on Kai's separately as trials are still ongoing...

Yang wanted to join badminton again so that he could be with his best friend but we knew from his P3 experience that it was too crowded so we dissuaded him. He wanted art then but we had then learnt more about secondary school CCAs so we encouraged / persuaded / psycho-ed / convinced him to pick something that he could continue in secondary school.

But we let art be his second choice, after track and field. Next two choices are basketball and robotics but art would definitely have a slot if he didn't get into track. When we received notification that he got into track and told him, he wasn't happy. He said he chose it coz of us :( Just try and see how...

During our recent fortnightly Sunday visits, Yang and Yu played badminton with AhYe downstairs. So Yu also wanted badminton. But too late :p And for the same crowdedness reason, we rather he didn't. He put robotics as his first choice. As a P3 CCA first timer, he had a good chance to get in. Next are track, chess and art. Indeed, he got into his first choice and was very happy to hear about it.

Both Yang and Yu will start their CCA next Wednesday. All the best!

Kai went camping

This was his second camp, first being the P5 camp. This time, it was for four days and three nights. Again, we got everything from Decathlon :)

Have fun, Kai!

Ya, he refused to turn around for a picture... Anyway, that was last Monday. I wouldn't have known what they were doing if not for the very active WhatsApp group chat among the parents. Many were worried about the escaped crocodiles from Batam but the kayaking went on anyway!

His absence was keenly felt. It was very quiet. Haha! Yang and Yu were happy to be on their own and were quite quiet in the day. We felt it more at night. Usually he would nua on our bed at 9.30 pm after finishing his chess games. On Monday night, nothing...

By Wednesday night, I was ready to have my Kai home!

On Thursday, Sito and I went to school for Kai's badge ceremony. So, the teacher told us, the kids would get a badge at the end of every milestone programme. For Sec 1, it was this Camp Discovery.

The boys reached school after we were seated. Thankfully, they didn't smell. Haha! But his bag smelled really bad coz he just dumped all wet stuff inside from day 1, yucks!

The kids were just loitering outside the classroom, staring in at the parents and just chatting, until a couple came in. Then I waved to Kai to get him in. The first thing he said was "act normal" - eh, ok...??? :p

One of the peer leaders addressed everyone before the start of the badge ceremony. Then the teachers got them out by registration number. It was very informal and everyone looked happy.

Kai didn't look happy but I think he was happy to leave the camp!

Their class happened to be the best class overall in the camp, for cheers and class flag etc, so there was a big pack of chips. Kai got two bags of chips which he devoured on the spot. Too hungry. We grabbed more food at 7-11 before going home.

Made him carry his own stuff :p

When he got home, he cried "home sweet home!" :p

That night, Sito and I sat on his bed while he put his head on Sito's leg and told us all about his camp. Briefly, kayaking on day 1, Sungei Buloh on day 2 and high elements on day 3. He was upset that he only managed to kayak for 30 min instead of three hours, coz the instructor claimed they were noisy. The wetlands were boring to him, but he enjoyed rock climbing, less so for abseiling.

It was very nice to hear him :)

The next day was wellness day, for them to rest at home after the camp. Sito brought Kai to Fong Sheng Hao for breakfast.

The pork and egg sandwich was yummy!

But he still preferred kaya butter toast. Ok we'll go for kaya butter toast after my ulcer is done!

Kai goes to secondary school

Kai started his secondary school journey on Thursday, 2 January. Where did the time go??

No longer the tiny boy at P1, he now stands at 166cm - just 2cm shorter than me! - and weighs 47.8kg. Kind of slim built. But his hands and feet are very big, bigger than mine!

Must give such a face when taking photos - why oh why?

The school posting results came out on Wednesday, 18 December. Sito checked my SMS when he woke before me. Gan cheong Papa :) When I woke, first thing I did was to order books from Popular, together with his brothers'. Popular called me on Friday to confirm availability and we went to collect on Saturday.

This was the first time we bought books from Popular. Try something new, and also, school bookshop no longer delivered primary level books by then! Learning points:
  1. Some books in the booklists are classified as assessment books rather than textbooks. The call told me a few books were not available but when I double checked with the staff on the ground, she found two under assessment books.
  2. Popular prices are very similar to booklist prices, mostly cheaper, some more expensive, but at the scale of a few cents. But at Popular, textbooks have 5% discount, and assessment books 10% to 25% so it's cheaper to buy at Popular.
  3. Bring a cabin suitcase to carry the books. But try not to buy shoes on the same day, haha! We happened to need three more pairs of shoes so it was a lot to carry!
Went to the school bookshop to get the remaining books and stuff on the Friday after Christmas. The teenager attending to me was as blur as me so somehow I had two A5 exercise books for free... Sito called it the cost of doing business.

As for uniforms, we went to the Henderson outlet on the Monday before Christmas. I thought it would be less crazy compared to the outlet in Orchard. But it was still quite a hassle trying on clothes and deciding the size to buy, especially when I had an uncooperative tween, grrr!

At this point, it looks like he will outgrow his corporate tee in no time, coz it was not on the sample rack and he refused to try when the staff brought the real deal to us. In fact, it might be snug after washing... I shall find out tmr!

And as part of his secondary school gear, he got a brand new iPhone 13. Bought it a few months back but finally gave him on 26 December after activating his SIM card. He's been playing chess on his phone but otherwise, he's still figuring other things out.

Anyway, Kai came home on the first day, telling us about his new lock before he even took off his shoes. Sito said he had the same type of lock for his locker in secondary school too. But he hasn't been issued a locker yet. And he didn't listen much to all the speeches, typical...

Friday was Chapel Day for him, and also first day of school for Yang and Yu. So I had four shirts to iron yesterday. This term, each kid will wear the shirt on weekly Chapel Day and corporate tee on other days. Yang will also start to wear a tie! Hope to get a picture tmr...

We didn't get down to watching Sonic 3 during the term break so we decided to watch it after school on Friday, as a form of celebrating first week of school? They came home, dropped their bags and changed into long sleeves (and Yu took a dump) before we set off for Orchard.

Lunch at Sushiro

Yes, Kai took a wefie on his phone and I asked him to send it to me :) Told him no phone usage at the dining table other than taking photos...

The movie they were going to watch

Yes, they. Coz we only bought tickets for them! Sito helped them find seats and settle them down with their popcorn and drinks (more ex than the tickets btw), and then we went for tea :p

Btw, their online ordering wasn't very good. It took longer than queueing - Sito was spotting a couple at the end of the queue when I ordered - and the SMS to inform me that my order was ready arrived at... 9.18 pm!!!

Anyway, towards the end of the movie, Sito and I sat at the seating area outside Macs at Lido to wait for them. As expected, they were among the last to come out coz must watch credits to see if there were any post credits scenes.

So, achievement unlocked! Will always leave them alone if Sito and I are not keen on the show... At some point, they can find their way to the cinema without us too!

Tmr will be week 1 of the term, the past week being week 0. Kai will still be having orientation. Hope he will have a good time in secondary school :)
