Fans of True Singapore Ghost Stories will know about the frangipani scent in the presence of a pontianak, the literal ghost of our childhood.
When we first smelled frangipani after moving back to Holland Village, we remembered that oh ya, we used to smell that back in our first home too! No pontianak in Bukit Panjang :p
Anyway, the ghost story...
Last night, when we smelled frangipani again, Sito said we were too high up for pontianak. Very funny. Anyway, it was a warm night so we decided to turn on the aircon - first time in months that we slept with the aircon!
And while we were watching TV, I heard noises coming from the bathroom... Was it water dripping from the shower, which happens sometimes? Or maybe a pontianak to prove Sito wrong?? :p
As I walked over, about to open the door to check, the sound become more distinct. I started to sense it was... alive! Claws...?! Fangs...?!
The next thing I knew, something black started coming through the gap between the door and the threshold...
... I stepped back and called Sito...
... while it emerged fully...
... It was a... beetle!
Phew, thankfully not a cockroach! (Or a pontianak)
It flew about the light for a while before we turned it off and turned on the light outside instead. But the bug didn't fly out. We found it stationary on the floor. So Sito grabbed it with some tissue and threw it down the chute.
The smell of the pontianak remained strong in the kitchen... Nice but we retreated to the comfort of our room.
Maybe it was scary back then, but now the pontianak really is *fondly* the ghost of our childhood. VS. kids today who will reminisce about a head in the toilet, I prefer memories of a vengeful female ghost with a crying baby...!
