Year end festivities

It's year end again. This year really flew by. This December has been great. Sito was not on leave but his schedule was very good so we got a lot of him :)

Papa teaching them about centre of gravity at dinner time, after an episode of Beyblade mentioned it

Friday afternoon date with many pancakes!

Sito sat with the kids while I had a peaceful shower

This was Kai's fifth set since we got back from Legoland, all mini sets that Sito bought more than a year ago! But Kai didn't continue after the first couple of times. Too difficult, he said *.* This was way bigger than the four he did earlier. So Sito has been doing it while watching drama at night...

Kai and Yu wanted to jog with Papa

He even prepared a sauce to baste our deli ham!

The chef carving the ham

Our Xmas eve dinner!

Our first Xmas tree shot at Guthrie House

My heart swells to see this as we walked towards the MRT station :)

Since it's Xmas, we got a log cake!

Yu popped a figurine into his mouth before I could take a picture *.* This was from Chateraise - very nice! We got the white chocolate one last year so changed to milk chocolate this year. Also got a second log cake from Swee Heng after Xmas - 30% off :p

"Can this be eaten?" "Is this edible?"

Bring them out to eat at Bangkit and cut hair for the new school year!

Very happy to see Yang choosing economical bee hoon instead of prata! Yu said he wanted that next time too. But the next day, Yang wanted prata at home, haha! Ok, eat more prata. Indulge them this season...

Also indulged them in Nintendo in the past few weeks. They get unlimited play time on weekdays! It's mostly Kai playing, Yang and Yu sometimes. Strange thing is the ones not playing often become very sweaty *.* I played with them only a couple of times though.. Mama isn't very good at this...

Very excited over Mario Party mini games!

Watching a busker performing magic tricks along Orchard Road

Brought them out yesterday. It was late but there were still Xmas lights! Went shopping at Decathlon and Kinokuniya. Finally got a second pair of school shoes for Yu. Also got Chinese comics for them, heh...

Our second Xmas tree shot!

Learnt to use the panoramic function to take the whole tree. Kai moved so he looks a bit weird in the above photo. The one below is taken by Yang - well done!

Yu decided to be the 第三者 again

We were in Orchard also for our end of year feast. Decided to bring the kids out for a buffet dinner - they've had hotpot and BBQ buffet, thought we would go for variety this time. Somehow the kids thought the silver dining buffet was better *.*

We spent two hours eating, which is very long for us! The kids might have had one hour of dessert haha! Don't think they ate much proper food but they seemed happy :)

The kids started on dessert before us

Gummy worm vampire!

"Oh, a flower for Mama?" "No, it's a drill in a drill." *.*

Kai made himself so at home by dessert time

They looked up for the 10th floor where we had dinner

Didn't know the bridge was accessible!

Us :)

To remind the hub of what he said years back before we were together, something about having to see the lights with just me... Well, it's me forever and ever haha!

Today, we just did our regular programming - playground and Ichiban Sushi. Had a little chat with the boys on what they learnt this year and what they would like to learn next year.
  • Kai learnt to be a Beyblade mechanic
  • Yang learnt to write smaller words
  • Yu learnt to use spoon and fork to eat rice properly
It was very hard to get that out of them! I had to share what I learnt to get them going. So I had to help them with next year's goals:
  • Use chopsticks
  • Speak more Mandarin
  • Get along!
So that's it, 2022. See you soon, 2023!

Are we ready for school year 2023??

The week after returning from Legoland, we did more preparation for school reopening!

Shoes

On Monday, we went to Jurong East to get school shoes. I ordered a pair from Decathlon for Yu. While waiting for it to arrive at the Westgate store, we went to the Westgate playground. It was drizzling a bit so I let them play for a short while. They had fun though Kai looked too big for it already!

Anyway, the Decathlon shoes were too small :( But I really want to get that for Yu so I bought only one pair of Skechers for him; will get Decathlon when we head to town next week. Also bought only one pair of North Star laced-ups each for Kai and Yang as we got them shoes while in Legoland - that was a very good buy!

Besides school shoes, also bought Crocs for them all - Kai's right sandal was cracked at the sole; Yang's sandals stink like mad - need to wash and dry again but they're getting old anyway; Yu's shoes were starting to fall apart and getting small. And we were so lucky so Kai's left sandal gave way irreparably barely a minute after we left Crocs!

Found a seat nearby to change

Btw, this boy has big feet - 38-39 vs. my 39-40! Yang is a 36-37 and Yu 33-34. We were at Bata when Sito joined us - heng, coz three bags of shoes, three boys and evening peak hour traffic would have made me very dead by the end of the day!

Got Sito a pair of slippers before heading for an early dinner at Paradise Dynasty. Kai and Yang managed to use chopsticks to take XLBs for themselves :) I only had to help Yu, which was manageable. Each of us had a bowl of noodles too so we ate quite a lot!

Found easy shorts at a bargain at Uniqlo so got them for LNY to go with the tees we got while in Legoland. Then it was home...

One of these days, I'll spray waterproofing stuff on the canvas ones. Also need to teach Yang how to tie shoelaces and give Kai a refresher course!

Books

The books arrived before Legoland. The boys wrote their name on the workbooks while I wrapped up the textbooks and stuck name labels from preschool time on them. Yang's maths and science textbooks are different from Kai's so I didn't bother much with those as Kai won't be handing them down. Yu doesn't have music textbook and a literature book anymore so I didn't bother much with those too.

I emptied out a cabinet for Yu some time ago. Well, it isn't exactly empty; there's still some household stuff in the lower part but I figure he won't need that much space yet...

School bags

Kai and Yu's bags arrived before Legoland too. I didn't get a new one for Yang as his is still in very good condition and he likes it.

I unpacked the bags, gave them a wipe and threw their pencil cases and umbrellas inside. Freed up some space in the cabinet so we don't miss getting the books into their bags later. I already have Yu's packing list for week 1. For Kai and Yang, I'll print out when I get it and have them pack themselves!

Others?

Uniforms are long washed and ironed, just waiting to be worn.

Next will be to prepare them mentally for school. Can't believe Yu is going to P1 already, and Kai P5?! Yang will be P3 but goodness, he is still such a baby! And he cannot remember many Chinese words from P1 - he's not worried but I am!!

I guess I also need to prepare myself mentally....

One year of no helper!

I was sitting in front of the TV on Wednesday night, 21 Dec, when I suddenly realised that we had survived one year without a helper! I checked the next day and found that I was wrong by one day; I sent off the helper on 20 Dec 2021.

It seemed that the year had passed very quickly, more quickly than usual. Maybe things move at home - toilets get washed, food gets cooked, bedsheets get changed. At work, things may not move - discuss abc to death, revise xyz for the nth time, haha!

Well, what has changed in the past year? Nothing too major. I was already working part-time prior to this so I still keep my afternoons available for the kids. I think the three most major changes are as follows:

1) The kids learn to do their part

I remember in the beginning, when I started doing laundry after dinner, I had to hang the clothes up at close to 9 pm. Yu wanted me to lie in bed long long time with him so he asked me to get a kakak to do laundry! When I changed laundry habits, he stopped saying that.

Due to the weird hours I do laundry, they don't get to help me hang up clothes. But starting from I think the second half of the year, I got them to fold their own clothes. At first, I gave them a small chopping board to guide them to fold. Now they just fold. Very ugly but they fold. When I see a neat drawer, I will compliment them in the hope that they continue to improve!

They also make their own bed. I don't like to make the beds right after getting up due to the warmth and even sweat. The kids can sweat buckets even with aircon! So they don't make their bed on school days. On non-school days, they make their bed after breakfast. They are more accomplished in this as they started on this earlier.

They can always keep their own toys. Just messy but I can handle that.

This past week, I also got them to do some spring cleaning of their toy drawers. Got rid of dust balls (!) in Kai's room, reduced the number of loose Lego bricks in Yang and Yu's drawers.

I want to get them to wash their own dishes too but the way they use water.... Maybe next time...

2) The kids eat more varied food

Kai once said my cooking was bad, should get kakak back to cook. Wait a minute - thought you didn't like her food much too? Guess what he said? Her cooking was bad but still better than mine!! Hmph!

I hope I have improved by now...

Anyway, I think my dishes are more varied. We used to have different types of sliced meat in the same weird brownish sauce, stirfried with onions. Now, we may have simple panfried meat, or bulgogi, or salmon and vege stirfry, or Yu's fave 糖醋排骨 :) I even put lady's fingers into fried rice.

Sometimes, I make noodle soup for dinner. The easiest is meatball macaroni soup, or bee hoon or kway teow - so easy and yummy! So long as I don't add prawn paste to the meatball coz Kai doesn't like prawns or fishball texture.

More importantly, I try to make simmering soup at least once a week. Ok, this started only towards the end of the year but better late than never? The kids don't like soup days but I think they are getting used to it. Kai and Yu can drink very fast now. And Yang, well...

Once I made radish soup. Yang said that he preferred black bean soup. The next time, I made black bean soup. He said he didn't like it *.* But later, he told Sito (I was in the shower?) that he had got used to soup. I must be consistent! So even in school holidays when I try to cook less, I still try to make soup once a week.

3) The house is cleaner, I think...

Our robot mop AKA Robot-kun does most of the floor jobs on a near daily basis. I steam the floors once a month. Or less frequently coz I don't do it during school holidays. So I think our house is cleaner!

Oh, but the balconies are less clean coz the floors are no longer scrubbed once a week! I scrubbed once and steamed once this year. The rest of the time, it's just our trusty Robot-kun - due to a drop in height, I have to bring it to the balconies manually but it's so worth it.

We went out for breakfast on Wednesday. Something different from our usual Yakun. When I realised our one year anniversary that night, this seemed like a celebration? :) Kai had a breakfast platter but didn't want the toast; Yang, Yu and I shared the yummy toast; Yang and Yu also had a croissant each! My fried cheese sandwich was a reward for scrubbing toilets more than 100 times haha!

Back to Legoland, woohoo!

Our last trip was almost exactly three years ago. We cancelled a trip in the March holidays of 2020 when COVID hit. Poor Yu was looking forward to Legoland when he turned four in 2020 and could take a lot more rides but no luck. Now, he's six and can take all the rides!

Day 1 - Tuesday, 13 Dec

Got the same big car though no helper this round - spacious!

Btw, Kai wasn't too keen on photos but Yang tried to keep him still while Sito had fast fingers! We brought a car seat along but realised all the back seat seatbelts were across the waist so we didn't use it. We ended up forgetting it and the kind driver brought it back for us the next morning. And best, he was also our driver on our leg home *.* This time, we put the car seat with the suitcase so we didn't forget about it.

We couldn't get the same place as our last trip; they were all delisted :( The place we got this time didn't have facilities for baggage drop. But the host was kind enough to let us put down our stuff after the previous guests had checked out and before the cleaner came. It took us two hours to get there due to a slight jam at both checkpoints so just nice, Sito didn't have to wait too long before he could drop the baggage.

In the meantime, I brought the boys to play first!

But gosh, Legoland was packed that day! There were queues at the ticket booth and guest services. We had printouts for our annual pass renewals - oh, they extended our passes from three years ago due to COVID! - so we went straight in.

Turned to the VR ride side but the queue was too long. Spent some 30 min waiting for the small dragon. That was Yu's first roller coaster ride! As usual when I sit with a kid, I put an arm across the boy's body. Yu hugged my arm. As we went on the second continuous round, he went, "oh no..." But he didn't appear scared.

Next was the big dragon which I found to be less scary. The poor boy hugged my arm and as the dragon continued, he went, "be brave, be brave..." My heart broke :( So poor thing! :( Ok, no more roller coaster for him. But later, he said the big dragon was the best, hmm...

Catching Pokemon during the hour-long wait for the big dragon

Also play old-school game

"Banana hands!"

There were so many people that even lunch spots were full past 2 pm. After all the queueing, we were pretty tired. We were lucky to get a seat. Kai had a burger, Yang hotdog bun and Yu fried chicken. Sito added a nugget kiddy meal in anticipation of leftover from the kids and so that we wouldn't be too full for dinner. We had to eat some of Yu's food. The french fries were better than we remembered. There was also ice cream which was part of each meal now.

Sitting next to the volcano ride and saw a couple of splash tests by staff

The kids ran off to the ball playground in Egypt and spent a long time there being bullies - blocking the way upstairs unless a ball was paid for passage *.* Terrible! We only saw when we went in to get them out.

Watched a new 4D show - the monster chasers. Got pretty wet from all the water spraying in the show! Then the kids went to build stuff. We went in the middle of a session and they ran out of wheels *.* So they just built stuff to withstand quakes until they found wheels that others left behind.

We found seats next to them and just watched :)

Racing!

It started drizzling while they were at the playground. A bit sian but it drove out the crowd! We brought raincoats for the boys. Kai and Yang could still wear theirs. Yu's was a disposable one. He asked why his was so plain :p Ok, I'll buy a proper one for him for the next trip!

Plain but longer leh! :p

The fire fighting team on my side

The other fire fighting team who won coz Papa was very strong

Papa went to buy water and drop things off at the apartment while I stayed with the kids to play at Medini Mall. No point dragging everyone back; it might be difficult to get out once they saw the game console...

Kai didn't want to play much - nice lying down on a stone seat too

Crab at Tian Lai!

While kids were playing games

The timing of food arrivals was great - crab at the end when we finished most of the food! We ordered hokkien mee, hor fun, fried rice, vege, eggs, pork and prawns as well. The boys liked the carbs! So happy to see them try new things :) Kai tried a bit of crab but spit it out due to a shell bit. Well, try again next time!

Took us a long while to get a ride back to the apartment. The boys settled down with their phone games and the game console. They even found Netflix! But I suspect the Netflix belonged to previous guests *.*

Yu decided to sleep with us and we agreed coz our bed was bigger. But the poor boy cried when he realised I didn't bring a soft toy for him! I offered my tummy, which was soft :p That cheered him up. Then he decided to hug my arm to sleep. So sweet...

Day 2 - Wednesday, 14 Dec

As usual, we went to the water park on day 2. Last time, we packed Tian Lai for lunch. This time, we packed for breakfast and had a late lunch outside since there was no need for the kids to nap anymore!

Fried beehoon - should get large, not medium, next time :p

We spent quite some time rafting. Yu is tall enough to walk! But they all wore life vests just in case. I floated mostly with Kai crawling all over me and splashing water on me *.* Sito tried to float but often got off to help Yu get on his float as he wasn't strong enough to do so himself.

Went to the joker slides next. Yu went straight to the highest one! So brave. We also went to the family raft and the mat racer. I tried the mat racer again - as Sito said, less scary after the first time three years ago but I still screamed at every drop in height *.* Yu was super brave - he went up again coz he wanted to try all three types of tubes! I brought Kai and Yang to the wave pool instead.

While waiting for the family raft - the light made Sito look bald *.*

Our cool boys waiting for the mat racer

The joker was closed so people went to queue for other rides and the floats were hard to come by. We managed to float for quite a while until Yu needed to pee. Then we spent our last stretch at the baby slides. They still found it fun enough :)

Checking out the balcony after a warm shower

Yes, must pose :p Even though the background is like a swamp, some trees, some sand patches and some half-built buildings...

Lunch was mookata at Bar B Q Plaza, Paradigm!

As usual, the kids fought to cook but there wasn't enough space so I stopped them. Then the parents couldn't cook fast enough *.* We didn't feel quite full after that so we found A&W. Dessert sounded good after meat!

Two snack set 4 so two root beer and two waffles with ice cream for RM16!

Kai was behind Yang; he hid from the camera *.*

We then went shopping - bought two pairs of laced up shoes for Kai and Yang at RM90 for two! Some months back, I thought Kai's palm was catching up with mine, with his thumb nail already bigger than mine. But now, his feet are also catching up - he wears a 39 with a bit of room to spare and I'm a 40-41!

Found this Vivo Pizza with up to 50% off on Wednesdays for members!

Oh yes, we ate a lot haha! But the mookata really wasn't a lot..

Gave the boys some tokens to spend and then they gathered to watch Papa spend the last indivisible token

This was how the boys spent their pre-bedtime while on holiday

This night, Sito and I switched our spots on the bed. Yu said he wasn't used to nestling against me with me on his left. Indeed, in the middle of the night, he turned towards Sito :p

Day 3 - Thursday, 15 Dec

Back to the theme park today! The Tuesday crowd was gone! Even though there were two school groups, the queues were a lot more manageable. Wondering why...

We started the day at BIG supermarket

Yes, my hub is like my sons, like to hold big fruits and say heavy! Hoho! We got a tube of Mentos for each of the monkeys - free to eat whole day. They were so happy :)

Kai was very kiasu after Tuesday. While the welcome show was still on, he got Yang to stand with him right before the barriers next to the stage. Once the staff removed the barriers, they ran to the VR ride! There were two other boys doing the same, about the same age as Kai. But of course, the ride had not opened yet!

Yu and I leisurely went to take this spinning ride above water. None of us had taken this before. He had his raincoat on coz it was drizzling. I could not bring my brolly onboard. So I got quite wet - there was a staff who was hitting the water spray button on dry ground at the passing cars. And best, Sito was also doing the same! And unlike the staff who didn't splash us when I waved no, this hub cheekily hit the button! Grrr...

Kai and Yang took the next round

And then they were first in line for the VR ride!

Sito saw the ride testing with empty cars so guessed correctly that it would start soon. In the meantime, Yu and I took pictures and rode the "coffee cup" ride. Then we went to queue for the VR ride - not that we wanted to ride but we were queueing for Kai and Yang! Let a few families go ahead until they finished their ride and came back.

On a VR ride without riding :p

"I want to hug the policeman!"

Managed to take a photo of them starting on their ride

Three years ago, he was shorter than Master Wu; now he's taller!

Another classic photo coz we used to spend so much time waiting for the brothers playing Ninjago!

Beetle bounce in the drizzle

Watched another new 4D show Journey to Mythica - it was so nice!

The good old aeroplane ride, with lots of insect repellent!

Went to KFC at Medini Mall for lunch. They were really slow. We waited a long time for our food. Also bought fried chicken from Shilin to top up Kai's lunch coz he had only popcorn chicken. Their Shilin is whole and bone-in. Had it for supper later...

Thanks for the photo, Yang! :)

Yu went to Ninjago with Papa while his brothers went to the playground - yes, the one where Yang had a poop and Yu had a pee *.* They came to join us soon enough.

两只羊过河,在桥中间相遇……

They used to be fearful crossing this and Kai brought them across; now, fearless!

Champion! It's quite heavy...

Did Christmas activities and got three Santa hats!

Btw, that's a big Lego birthday cake behind. It's Legoland Malaysia' 10th birthday. It's quite nice to be in Legoland in December. So festive :)

The crowds came in in the afternoon when it turned sunny. Not as bad as Tuesday but the queues for the driving school and the boating school were kind of long. So we left a bit earlier for after activities :p

First, we went shopping at AEON! Got five tees for the boys. At first I thought it was "buy 2 get 3rd free" but no, it was "buy 2 get 3 free"! So happy haha!

Then, we grab some buns for breakfast. It was quite crowded so after selecting their buns, they waited outside while I queued to pay. But they were all gone by the time I came out. I search the toilets and around the escalator etc. Nowhere to be found! Just as I was about to turn to the toilets again, I saw a red bear - it was Yu! Papa got them to go see doughnuts *.* So scary for me to lose sight of them!

Ok, time for Korean BBQ to calm myself!

孝敬爸爸妈妈 :)

Kai tasted it a bit and said yucks :p

Got the staff to cook for us so we could relax. Five small plates of meat, many small plates of vege, a pot of soup, a pancake, some rice and a complimentary fuwa fuwa egg dish later, we were ready to relax more - foot massage!

The staff at Eminent Reflexology were very nice and let the boys have a seat to play phone games. Yes, we brought their phones with us the whole day in anticipation of this haha! The seats were very very big so very good for us. Our prepaid card still had almost RM500. Spent half on 90 min of bliss :)

Bought Blackball for dessert back in the apartment, where we watched a bit of Bullet Train on Netflix while the kids slept. Their cheese milk tea was so good!!

Day 4 - Friday, 16 Dec

Last day already! Sighs... We checked out early and put our suitcase in the locker at Legoland.

Play games in the morning

A successful shot, finally!

We split up again. I think Sito brought the older boys to VR. Yu and I went boating. He could steer very well! I just had to remind him sometimes to turn back in time. And I controlled the pedal :p

He had to wear the life vest due to height requirements

Hugging chef :)

Kai and Yang did the power tower with Papa but all gave up, haha!

More Ninjago!

Yu was very good. He got over 100k points from his first ride. Somehow this time, Kai and Yang couldn't score beyond five digits. Kai was super pissed off and soon refused to even play *.* In the end, Yu and I played many many games until my arms were dead - coz I had a winning streak and hit my "full potential" of over 200k! Finally, I played with one arm and Yu won :p

Convinced them to queue for the driving school. Kai was very aggrieved when the family in front suddenly added two more kids and squeezed us out of the next session! The wait was made longer by his complaining *.* Sito left without watching them drive coz we were reaching the three hour limit of the locker time. He went out first to get seats at BK - it was much less crowded than KFC!

Our kiasu kids were first to come out of the briefing room

While at BK, we learnt that our ride would be late as there was a huge jam coming into JB. So we went to Sea Life for a while. Yu managed to go to the end and colour fish like before while Kai and Yang were playing a game nearer the entrance. In the end, the driver texted Sito and Yu cut short his colouring. Yang said he wanted to explore more of Sea Life but too bad, we got to go.

The wheels of our suitcase were busted by the time we wheeled it to the pick-up point at the end of Medini Mall *.* The top handle broke after the cruise. But for Legoland, it's still a useful suitcase...

Anyway, we saw the long queue of cars coming into JB. Quite scary. Luckily, our journey into SG was smooth enough. Got home in 75 min despite a trip to refuel and a slight hold up at the SG checkpoint.

Had a simple chicken rice/YTF dinner and we were done for the day! Oh, we finished Bullet Train first, haha!

Can't wait to replicate our itinerary soon!! :)
